Clean-up of Lady Erin statue is urgently needed

The cleaning and repair of the Lady Erin monument at Market Cross Sligo needs urgent attention to allow it to be brought up to standard appropriate to its iconic status in Sligo according to councillor Cllr Arthur Gibbons. The monument was erected in 1898 to honour the centenary celebrations for the lost Sligo heroes who had fought in the insurrection of 1798. 2023 marks the 125th anniversary of 1798 and while it still a little bit away, Cllr Gibbons believes that because of the specific expertise required, planning needs to be put in place now to have the work done. Cllr Gibbon who previously served on Sligo Corporation pointed out that the The Lady Erin Monument also serves as a marker to signify the centric 1 mile to distinguish between the areas of Sligo Borough Council and Sligo County Council.
