French President Emmanuel Macron signed his controversial pension reform into law Saturday, defying three months of protests and pleas from unions not to implement the legislation.

Unions have called for a “tidal wave” of protests to oppose the plan to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64.

Following the French Constitutional Council approval of the core of the bill on Friday, April 14, the government promised its promulgation within forty-eight hours. According to the countrys Journal Officiel, it is now done.

The unpopular pension reform, with its flagship measure of raising the retirement age to 64 years, was promulgated this Saturday morning in the Official Journal.
