Many EV enthusiasts are eagerly waiting for solid-state batteries. Volkswagen and Toyota are expected to adopt them by the middle of this decade. However, the Japanese carmaker will do that in “a little bit unintuitive” way in the words of Gill Pratt, Toyota’s chief scientist. That’s because the automaker will put them first in a hybrid vehicle.

Volkswagen is not alone as a QuantumScape partner. In fact, that has not been the case since September 2021, but we confess we missed that one. The solid-state battery’s new partnership is with “an established global luxury automotive original equipment manufacturer (the “OEM”).”

Makoto Uchida does not know if the Nissan Ambition 2030 plan is overinvesting or underinvesting in electrification. Despite that, the Nissan CEO told Automotive News he is confident the company will start selling cars in 2028 with solid-state batteries. The price of these cells will be $75/kWh, and it will eventually fall to $65/kWh.

If regular lithium-ion cells were people, they should be feeling depressed right now. Most EV makers use them not because they want but because they have to while solid-state batteries are not ready. Mercedes-Benz has just joined its Japanese competitors by making a deal with Factorial Energy. The main goal of this agreement is to start testing solid-state cells produced by the American SSB startup as soon as next year.
