100 fm the pike. Sonic Beer Blog #37: Lamplighter Brewing Co. Speedwagon Kolsch-Style Ale. Nothing tastes better than FREE beer but this was also a gift from a friend who highly recommended it. That made me nervously anticipate the overall experience because I would hate to report back to him that it was not to my taste. I know what you're saying, "A real friend would say it was wonderful and thank him again for the lovely and thoughtful gift. I would counter that by saying friends don't lie to people they love and respect. When it comes to tact I'm horribly deficient. But after the first sip of Lamplighter Brewing Company's Kolsch-Style Speedwagon that whole inner discussion went out the window. The pour itself is a rich, amber hue with a paper white head. The first whiff has notes of caramel, toffee, and a subtle hint of citrus. The initial taste is a harmonious blend of malty sweetness and a touch of hop bitterness, with a complexity of flavors revealing layers of caramel, roasted malt, and a gentle warmth that lingers just long enough to keep you going back for more. What sets Speedwagon apart is its smoothness. The mouthfeel is velvety, with a medium body that strikes a perfect balance between substance and drinkability. The carbonation is just right, enhancing the overall experience without being overwhelming. This is a great brew to have if you're sitting in front of a huge pile of spicy wings or a greasy beef brisket sandwich. The Sonic Pairing: Even though the name of this ale is "Speedwagon" I would never do something as corny as pair it with an REO Speedwagon album…well, never say never. I mean, how could I not? The easy drinkability and bright flavors makes this a great one to crush while taking in a live music experience. With that we'll go with REO Speedwagon's 1977 live release, "You Get What You Play For". This was before they cracked the power ballad hit making code with their multi-platinum top 40 release, High Infidelity". This captures the band at their road dog best. When they had to take it to the people before MTV and use their tight bar band chops with ripping musicianship to leave a loud and lasting impression so they would come back for more the next time they hit town. Songs about hard living on the road with "Like You Do", "Music Man" and the epic "Riding The Storm Out". Early power ballad exploration like, "Being Kind(Can Hurt Someone)" and the country laced anthem "Son Of A Poor Man". It's good time Rock-n-Roll made to show folks a good time for their hard earned dollar. I'll always drink to that.

100 fm the pike. Sonic Beer Blog #36: Timberyard Brewing Co. Wolftree Stout. This stout from East Brookfield's Timberyard Brewing Company poured a deep, ebony with a thick tan head and was wicked dark. The first whiff was smokey and sweet with dark chocolate. It had a great balance of roasted malt, hints of chocolate and coffee which gave it a sweet smoothness. There is a little bitterness that adds to the mix by creating a great contrast.The mouth feel seemed a little thin but the layers of flavor kept it intertesting. The finish had a sweet malty bitterness with more chocolate. It was the overall smoothness that made this a real pleasure to drink. The Sonic Pairing: Smooth, smokey and sweet lead me to the live document from Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood, "Live From Madison Square Garden". These former Blind Faith band mates pull from both of their extensive catalogs with nuggets from their various musical projects. The sweetness of Derek And The Dominos(Clapton) "Tell The Truth" to the smokiness of the Traffic instrumental "Glad"(Winwood) to the smoothness of the solo Clapton hit "Forever Man" and Winwood's "Split Decision" make this a well balanced brew that flows like a delicious stout pouring into a glass.

100 fm the pike. Sonic Beer Blog #35: Bissell Brothers Precept German-Style Pilsner. Once again Bissell Brothers have taken a traditional style of beer and put their own twist on it. From the moment the golden elixir graced my glass, I knew I was in for a treat. The lively effervescence produced a frothy head and the first whiff was that of lemon and grain.Taking my first sip, I was immediately struck by the crisp and clean pilsner profile with a malt foundation and a subtle sweetness that swirled with a floral essence. This was perfectly balanced with a hop bitterness, and bready notes. The lemon was also present but not overpowering. The mouthfeel was light and the crispness made it extra refreshing. If you are not a fan of the omnipresent holiday spiced beers this time of year or burned out on the myriad of IPA's available this is a refreshing break! The Sonic Pairing: Crisp with floral notes immediately made me think of Smashing Pumpkins 1993 release, "Siamese Dream". This was the album that launched them into the stratosphere with hits like "Cherub Rock", "Disarm" and "Today". There are layers of crisp distorted guitars that form a wall of sound that oozes points of melody with Billy Corgan's vocals swirling anger and vulnerability throughout. From the anthemic build of "Soma" to the tender sweetness of "Spaceboy" all of the emotions are wrung out of a soul who's heart has been broken and is looking for solace anywhere they can find it.

100 FM The Pike. Sonic Beer Blog #34: Bay State Brewing Co. Blood Orange Lager. While Bay State Brewing calls this a Blood Orange Lager it actually has a full spectrum of citrus punch. The pour into Das Boot revealed a pink grapefruit color with a thick pink head and aromas of not just the sweet blood orange but also tangerine, mandarin and grapefruit rind. First sip brings the sweetness again of blood orange and grapefruit with cardamom. It has a crisp feel and is easily crushable. I was enjoying mine with a pile of Graveyard Wings from The District Wood Fired Kitchen and it was perfect for cutting through the spicy greasiness. The finish had more citrus and an almost creamscicle taste. This is a thirst quenching brew with a cornucopia of citrus flavors that makes it an easy drinking delight! The Sonic Pairing: The citrusy punch and swirl of flavors are a perfect a accompaniment for The Cult's Sonic Temple. An album that definitely has a complex layering of sounds from Billy Duffy's guitar that revolve around the big beats of drummer Mickey Curry. This makes a great canvas for singer Ian Astbury's wail and howl on songs like the hit "Fire Woman" and "Automatic Blues". There are also sweet moments like "Edie(Ciao baby)" with an undulant string section and gigantic guitar licks. It's balls out rock with a zesty kick.

100 fm the pike. Sonic Beer Blog #33: Foam Brewers #1 Hit Jam Imperial Fruited Sour Ale. This very berry sour from Vermont's Foam Brewers is smooth and fruity but beware, it does pack a (fruit)punch. I'm a huge fan of all berries and this ale does not disappoint in that department. A heavy whiff of earthy raspberry and blackberry with a light floral swirl on the pour. It had a beautiful light plum color with a healthy pink foam that dissipated quickly. The first sip was all the berries they say it is; blackberry, raspberry and black currant. More tart than sour and a bit of grain. It was on the finish that the 10% ABV slapped the back of my head! Very boozy on the finish with a sour bite and more raspberry. This is the only problem I have with this one: It's too delicious and has a great mouthfeel which makes it hard not to crush. At 10%, this could get you into trouble. Take it slow and savor this bacciferous(yes, that's a word) liquid. The Sonic Pairing: A great example of smooth and sweet with a sneaky punch is The Posies 1993 power pop gem, Frosting On The Beater. At that time the trend was down-tuned and dark. But The Posies released a radiant and candied set of songs crafted with caramel, nougat and nuts with a real distorted crunch. After the intro tracks "Dream All Day" and "Solar Sister" you can't help but finish the whole cherry cobbler of an album. After "Flavor Of The Month" and "Definite Door" you'll be hearing Wilford Brimley yelling "DIABEETUS" along with the sweet crisp hooks.

100 fm the pike. Sonic Beer Blog #32: Blaze Brewing Co./Around The Horn Brewing Co. Ice Cream Pop Sour Ale. This "sour" is not very sour at all. But that's ok! It is infinitely delicious non the less. This bi-coastal collaboration between Blaze brewing Co. out of Maine and Around The Horn Brewing from California is an absolute delight! It's a milk-shake ale brewed with strawberries, bananas, pineapple, lactose and a Dole Whip(which is a smoothie made of bananas, pineapple, coconut and lime) The sour part is more of a light tartness which is up front with the strawberry and banana. The finish is coconut and vanilla. It's a well balanced swirl of fruity flavors that brought an immediate smile to my beer hole. I was actually sad when I had emptied Das Boot but then immediately remembered I had more! It was kind of like remembering it was a four day workweek on Wednesday. The Sonic Pairing: For this carousel of sweet flavors that drinks easy and smooth I chose Come On Feel The Lemonheads by Boston's alt-pop masters The Lemonheads. Their history has roots in Punk but after a few albums lead Lemonhead, Evan Dando, learned how to write candied ditties that still sound a little frayed from too many miles in the van. From the soaring melodies of "The Great Big No", the spare richness of "Into Your Arms" or the country lilt of "Big Gay Heart" it's like a sampler platter of your favorite Christmas cookies. Even sad songs like "Favorite T" leave you with a honeyed taste in your mouth.

100 FM The Pike. Sonic Beer Blog # 31: 450 North Brewing Reefer Nuggets American IPA. We'll just start off with this disclaimer: Although the name and the can may imply it, THERE IS NO CANNABIS IN THIS BEER! Now that we have that out of the way, I'll say 450 Brewing's Reefer Nuggets is a complex tropical fruit and citrus experience that pairs well with a fat Slurricane pre-roll. The notes of pepper, cloves, and rosemary is a great contrast to the honeydew, tropical fruit and light hopiness of this brew. At first whiff you get the fruits with caramel. First sip hits with hops and grapefruit rind with the sweetness coming in right after. The finish is dry with more hops and citrus. With all this going on it's still a smooth drinking experience. It is 8% ABV so be careful if you do enjoy it with some icky-sticky. The Sonic Pairing: The word "Kaya" is a slang term for cannabis and also the name of a sweet jam made of coconut milk, eggs and sugar. It's also the name of a Bob Marley And The Wailers album that contains some sweet jams about weed. See how it all comes together?(or that may be the Slurricane pre-roll talking) In between the militant message driven albums Exodus and Survival, Bob and the band made Kaya, a much more laid back album of love songs to Jah, women, and Mary Jane. The opening track "Easy Skanking" sets the tone with the refrain "take it easy". This album also has one of the sweetest love songs with "Is This Love". It's main message: While you're fighting the evils in this world don't forget to take the time to enjoy the good things in life. Don't be the fool in the song "Time Will Tell". Get some "Kaya" now and enjoy with a sweet beer and a sweet love.

100 FM The Pike. Sonic Beer Blog #30: Wormtown Brewery Fresh Patch Pumpkin Ale. I have to admit, I am not a big fan of Pumpkin beers. There's not a lot of good ones. Shipyard had a good one and so did Smuttynose. But overall, I'm not into it. Most of the time it tastes fake or overly spiced. But Wormtown Brewery has seemed to find a balance I enjoy. Less spice, more gourd. I tend to like the ales that taste like fresh pumpkin more than full on pumpkin pie. You know, like the Pilgrims made it…or maybe it was the people the Pilgrims kicked out of Plymouth Plantation for making the Devil's brew. That's what you get with Fresh Patch. A fresher pumpkin taste with little sweetness and spice. The spices that come through in the nose are cinnamon and a bit of clove. It also has a healthy dose of malt and gourd. The first sip hits you with allspice and ginger with a hint of vanilla. More spicy ginger and malt on the finish with this light bodied seasonal. It's easy to drink and since it's not overly sweet I don't get sick of it after a couple. I also found it to be a great accompaniment a fried bologna sandwich with spicy mustard and purple onion. It's a real breath killer. The Sonic Pairing: The obvious choice would be "It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown Soundtrack". Then I thought that would be corny. Then I thought screw it. I love that album. It's got the familiar standards of "Linus And Lucy" and "The Charlie Brown Theme". But the Halloween focused tracks are actually creepy. With it's evil laughter and ghoulish howling laid over a West Coast Jazz style jam it sounds like something you would hear in a 70's cocktail lounge…if it was full of zombies and Freddy Kruger was the bartender. "Fanfare/Breathless/Trick Or Treat" has a haunting flute solo with sounds of Snoopy hiding from the Red Baron during battle and sounds of running footsteps and soft thunder. Pianist, Vince Guaraldi is a master at capturing a mood. No one would put a rock in his trick or treat bag.

I have to admit, I am not a big fan of Pumpkin beers. There's not a lot of good ones. Shipyard had a good one and so did Smuttynose. But overall, I'm not into it. Most of the time it tastes fake or overly spiced. But Wormtown Brewery has seemed to find a balance I enjoy. Less spice, more gourd.

100 Fm The Pike. Sonic Beer Blog #27: Lawson's Finest Liquids Hazy Rays New England IPA. Here we are, first week into October and it's 84 degrees with a hazy sky and I'm sweating like Mac Jones at the post-game podium. Summer seems to be like that last person at the bar that's been asked to leave twice and is still hanging on to the stool as he's being dragged out the door. And I'm ok with that! I love Summer and I'm always sad to see it go so an extension is always welcome. I enhanced that Summer feeling with a cold Lawson's Finest Hazy Rays. They call it a juicy New England IPA but it's actually pretty light on the hops and more malty with a slight tropical fruit finish. It's slightly sweet and effervescent which makes it perfect on a steamy day. The Sonic Pairing: Light, effervescent, sweet? Those are the vibes I get from Slightly Stupid's 2004 live acoustic release, "Live And Direct: Acoustic Roots". This session recorded in one take is a great hang on the porch with the feet up listen. Just two acoustic guitars, Kyle McDonald and Miles Doughty playfully singing originals like "Sensimilla", "Collie Man", and "Souled" as well as a couple of covers including a sweet version of "Used To Love Her" by Guns-N-Roses. Their chemistry flows like this thirst quenching ale from my boot to my mouth and I am feeling no pain and chill in this unseasonable heat. "Cool Down" indeed.
