The Michigan Supreme Court has upheld a decision that bars current Warren Mayor Jim Fouts from running for a fifth term in office this year due to recently-implemented term limits.

Jim Fouts, whose bid for a fifth term as Warren mayor was blocked by Michigan courts, complains that judges are wined and dined by law firms.

The Michigan Supreme Court decided Wednesday not to take up an appeal aimed at reviving the bid of Warren Mayor Jim Fouts for a fifth term.

WARREN — It appears to be the end of an era for the mayor who has served 42 continuous years as a Warren elected official.  Jim Fouts first served 26 years as a member of the City Council. In November, it will be 16 years for him as mayor.

WARREN — On April 21, the Michigan Court of Appeals overturned a lower-court ruling and ordered Warren City Clerk Sonja Buffa to remove Mayor James Fouts from the 2023 election ballot.

The deadline for a candidate to withdraw is 4 p.m. Friday. The primary is Aug. 8.

Fouts has been mayor of Michigans third biggest city since getting elected in 2007. He had sought a fifth term despite term limits for the city only allowing for three.

An appellate court ruled Friday that current Warren Mayor James Fouts is not allowed to run for a fifth term this year, overturning the ruling of a lower court that permitted Fouts to run.
