me. this is the news of live from berlin thailand's pro-military party takes the lead in much anticipated elections vote counting is still underway but partial results give the edge to the party supporting the ruling military regime critics accuse the military of having staff the political deck in its favor for life in bangkok for analysis it's also coming up. terrifying moments at sea of crew shift breaks down into dangerous waters off the norwegian coast will have an update on the rescue efforts for hundreds stuck on board. and is too recent made facing a revolt from within her own cabinet reports say the british prime minister could be pushed out and made dissatisfaction at her handling of. get the details from our correspondent but. i'm michael thanks for joining us early results from thailand's long delayed general election show the country's military party with a lead over its main challenger that's with election officials saying that ninety percent of ballots have now been counted. this man former army chief pride has led thailand since a military coup five years ago he wanted voters to keep him on as a prime minister promising stability to face the opposition. type party which raise questions about the fairness of the poll saying the rules say for the military. bringing in now our correspondent best in heartache he joins us from bangkok bastion the election commission is reporting most of the votes are in full military is slightly ahead what more can you tell us about the initial voting results so far . i think what's clear from the results that we've got so far is that it's a very strong result for the military party maybe stronger than a lot of people expected and look behind me this is the party headquarters of the prototype party that's the party of former prime minister yingluck shinawatra who was ousted by the military in the back in two thousand and fourteen and they're going to be disappointed with this result of course because they expected to be the winner now we've not all the votes are counted yet so we have to wait how that plays out and also the popular vote is one thing and the seats in parliament are another thing so we have to wait and see which party gets how many seats and then very important michel what coalitions are they going to form it's already clear that the military party has enough seats to elect the next prime minister because they also get the seats of the appointed senate appointed by the military that's two hundred fifty seats so they have those and they don't need a very many seats they'll need one hundred twenty six out of five hundred in the lower house of parliament which is what voters in elected today the question is are they going to get with their coalition partners are they going to get enough votes in the lower house to actually be able to pass legislation meaning will they get a simple majority of the seats in the lower house or not if that doesn't happen then we're headed for a political deadlock because then it's going to be most likely the current military dictator pirates on a child who's going to be the next prime minister. thailand but without the majority in the lower house they're not going to be able to pass a new legislation against the opposition in that and then. it's very likely that the people are going to be unhappy with that and there's already been rumors that if that happens and there is this deadlock that there might be another military coup michel the bus indeed initial results so far are going to be the talk of the town for the next at least twenty four hours how do you think the military party men and she get such results. but i think they're there's a lot there's a lot of factors that come into play here one thing for example is that the playing field wasn't level from the beginning for example other political parties were not allowed to campaign until late december of last year they only started campaigning then and the military on the other hand they were touring the country nonstop through all the provinces handing out money and trying to win over voters now the other thing is that the electoral system is puts the party that you see behind me at a disadvantage and one of their affiliates was disbanded just a few weeks ago that would have helped them gain more seats in parliament so that's how the the playing field wasn't level from the very beginning also of course. the whole set up of this where the where the senate is completely appointed by the military and then they only need those one hundred twenty six seats as i said out of five hundred to elect the new prime minister so that's how it was viewed from the very beginning michael. much thanks bastian that's our best and heartache in bangkok a dramatic rescue mission is underway in southern norway crews have been racing to bring cruise ship passengers to safety after their boat was stranded in dangerous waters the ship broke down on saturday with over a thousand passengers on board efforts are being made to tow the vessel to land but the ship stranding has already led to harrowing moments for those onboard. passengers rushed to shield themselves from sliding furniture and falling ceiling panels as heaving waves tossed the cruise ship from side to side some said those waves had smashed chip windows and sent cold sea water gushing in. elsewhere on board the mostly british and american travelers could do nothing but sit and wait for their turn to be airlifted to safety. amid winds of nearly ninety kilometers per hour and waves over eight meters high the viking sky sent out a mayday call early on saturday afternoon it had suffered engine failure and was beginning to drift towards the rocky shore fearing the ship would run aground the crew managed to anchor in the bay an area known since viking times has treacherously difficult to navigate. the cult and i think this is clearly a serious situation a cruise ship with one thousand three hundred passengers on board is stuck in one of the north and europe's would stretches of water scattered with reefs so this is a serious situation as it will. author and he's mobilized five helicopters for the operation though some had to be diverted to help a second vessel nearby the freighter with a crew of nine also suffered engine failure delaying the crew ship airlift. rescue passengers have been brought to a reception center on land clearly this was not the kind of adventure they'd had in mind when they booked their cruise. refresh. very frightening we all know a helicopter with a sling the two of us together and it was quite scary the severe weather is preventing rescue workers from using smaller boats to take passengers ashore so authorities now aim to tow the cruise ship itself and the hundreds of passengers still aboard. for the latest on the rescue operation i'm joined now on the line by i nicked knutson he's with the joint rescue coordination center for southern norway and we just saw him in the port thanks for joining us mr can knutson last we heard the viking sky was being towed to harbor where are you in that process. this ship just arrived in the hall though. no preparing to go to. do necessary preparations for that. so i guess within half an hour or so it should be. docked. my understanding is that some two thirds of the passengers that were originally on the ship are still there so by my count that's still somewhere in the area eight hundred passengers or so how are they doing. they are doing very well. we lifted all four hundred sixty. last night and i can this morning. on the ship change goals. how did this towards. the smoother seas the captain. for the time being he will need any further assistance. integration is concerned. this morning. no indication yet you're right some of the team and one hundred people are often on board to. be called in to the captain to control the whole of passengers on board. much has been made mr canoe to know about the weather surrounding this particular incident how dangerous was this rescue operation. well according to. the helicopter pilots and those same charge of that part of the operation it was just showing the actual what they could do it was thirty hard when. they had waves up to fifteen one five meters. question. with the joint center for southern north thanks for joining us and good luck with the rest of the operation now to some other stories making news around the world three members of australia and new zealand's indigenous communities have come together in still underway to assist survivors. british prime minister theresa may is coming under fresh pressure over her handling of media including the sunday times say that may's own cabinet is plotting to oust her while there was little sign of that pressure is made visitor church with her husband this morning she's reportedly planning a last ditch attempt to win support among lawmakers for her deal which hollande has rejected twice. for more on that i'm joined by our correspondent. in london may faces increasing pressure to resign burkett how likely is that to happen. there's everything going on as we speak i mean she's meeting with cabinet ministers we know there is a lot of pressure on her and her authority is really draining away by the day maybe even by the hour but will she really resign we don't know she's been extraordinary leave resilient over the past yes there were many moments where other prime ministers probably would have gone but she's tough it out she seems determined to try once more to get her deal through palm and but as you say the voices are getting louder for how to go how would may stepping down actually solve the problem that's a good question because over breaks it the country and the parliament is so fundamentally divided that it's difficult to see a solution coming out of this whole mess to reason may has been accused of not looking for a consensus of very early in the brics a process determining how our own red lines which point towards fairly hard breaks did not know membership in the single market or in the customs union and just plough through with it and now we see that she really does not have any consensus for how policy so read know that paul amend is looking for a solution but they're also still to resume a loyalist who had hoped that the deal will go through that says what philip hammond the child's laugh to say about this. in just over two weeks' time we run the risk of facing a very stark choice between leaving me you with no deal or not leaving the you at all it is essential that we get a deal done well in this deal most likely to be presented to parliament for if that time to defeats already is that a vote on this deal that she has hammered out with the european union is likely to happen next week thank you very good mass in london you're watching news from

country. forest starts first on w. . place. this is d w news life from berlin signs of an inconclusive results in thailand election as voters are counted exit polls show the opposition will winning the most seats but not enough to form a government what does this mean for a country following final years of military rule we'll go live to bangkok for analysis. terrifying moments at sea a cruise ship breaks down in dangerous waters off the norwegian coast will have an update on the rescue efforts for hundreds stuck on board. i'm looking for thanks for joining us. exit polls and thailand's first general election since a coup and two thousand and fourteen indicate the populist opposition type party has taken the most seats but prime minister and former army chief. is still hoping to extend his hold on power as the country returns to civilian control exit polls signaled his party took ninety six seats while one hundred and sixty three seats appeared to have gone to the poirot thai party and has links to oust the prime minister talks in. let's bring in d w correspondent he joins us from bangkok bust the exit polls indicate a victory of the opposition party where does that leave the country. well it depends on the call if they get enough seats to form a coalition to elect the prime minister and that seems rather unlikely at the moment. as you can see behind me the votes are being counted right now in these minutes and we expect preliminary results within the next few hours we have these exit polls now we have to be careful with that because we don't really know how reliable they are the electoral system is extremely complicated in thailand and so that all of these preliminary or not preliminary results but exit polls of course are subject to change but if they turn out to be true and if the poor thai party is the strongest force in the new parliament but they don't have the majority to elect the next prime minister that would mean there could be a political gridlock because. the being voted for right now is the lower house of parliament that has five hundred seats now what people don't get to vote for is the senate that has another two hundred fifty seats and those are appointed by the military and those two houses together need a simple majority to elect the next prime minister so that could leave the military with that simple majority to elect the next prime minister but it doesn't they don't have the majority in the lower house with which gets to pass legislation so so that means that they might be able to elect the prime minister but they might not be able to pass any legislation and then there is a political gridlock and then there's no telling what will happen there might be protests there might even be another coup and call times have made their voices heard they are longing for a change how likely are they to see that now given the possible outcome. well again a lot will depend on what actually happens later tonight we won't get the official results until may but if if the current military dictator protonix if you becomes the next prime minister there's no reason why there should be he should but there should be any policies that he could force that he hasn't already put into practice considering the fact that in the last five years he's had almost unlimited power to to change things now he will be the prime minister and he'll be faced with with an opposition of some sort so it will become harder for him so there's no reason to see why he should be unable to why you should be able to to to make change happen when when he hasn't done that so far now if we do see that gridlock as i just laid out then as i said there's no real telling what's going to happen there is this prospect of more street protests that we saw in thailand so often in the past and then there is also the prospect of another coup a daunting prospect actually then there might be change but it's not going to be positive very likely in the next few years presumably. following the situation in thailand thank you very much. a dramatic rescue mission is underway in southern norway crews have been racing to bring cruise ship passengers to safety after their boat was stranded in dangerous water the ship broke down on saturday with over a thousand passengers on board efforts are being told the vessel to land but the ship to navigate. the cult and of course it will not you this is clearly a serious situation this is a cruise ship with one thousand three hundred passengers on board is stuck in one of the north and europe's worst stretches of water scattered with reefs so this is a serious situation as it was from author and he has mobilized five helicopters for the operation though some had to be diverted to help a second vessel nearby the freighter with a crew of nine also suffered engine failure delaying the crew ship airlift. rescue passengers have been brought to a reception center on land clearly this was not the kind of adventure they'd had in mind when they booked their cruise. to refresh. very frightening we were not on the helicopter with the sling the two of us together and it was quite scary the severe weather is preventing rescue workers from using smaller boats to take passengers ashore so authorities now aim to tow the cruise ship itself and the hundreds of passengers still aboard. a short while ago we got the latest on the rescue operation from anarchy then he's with the joint rescue coordination center first southern norway and we just saw him in the report i asked him how the operation is not holding well it's going called it a blood money. to turn the ship the rome. on its no having to hold my last. place called. which is on the western coast of norway. the captain. to stop the immigration for the time being he would like of that eternal know to ship people along to see how. stabilize the ship is. one he considered he will decide whether or not to continue with the operation the captain is of course so. his decision will be. a decision on. the ship is moving with some hold on june. eighth not. to talk. of the front one on one of the banks of for the time being the situation is on the control of passengers on board a ship those remaining or according to the captain safe so we will just see how it develops for the next couple of. nobody's being evacuated at the moment what's being done for the passengers who have been airlifted to land already. taken to. a rescue center. representatives. from those who don't associate. the local police. to take you. forward to. a place on the mainland. they are. those who came in last night and early most of. the hotels in india area. of the shipowner over london died all to take out food cause when the ship is coming into the port of malta hopefully this often all the crew on the remaining passengers will be thank you momo and then of course they will be taking care of them for years they really are shipped back home. where they belong. thank you very much aigner kids and now to some of the other stories making news around the world . british prime minister to resign maine is coming under fresh pressure over her handling of her exit british media say that may's own cabinet is plotting to oust her as soon as monday this after hundreds of thousands protested in london to demand a new referendum on the. members of australia and new zealand's indigenous communities have come together in sydney to show solidarity with the victims of last week's gun attacks on two mosques in christchurch new zealand has announced it will hold a national remembrance service on march twenty ninth for the fifty people killed in the attacks. and. the most some bacon government says half a million people have been affected by the devastating cycle more than six hundred people have been confirmed dead after the storm raged across mozambique zimbabwe and malawi the true death toll is believed to be much higher efforts are still underway to assist survivors. our correspondent has been in zimbabwe taking a look at the aftermath of cyclonic there he sent us this report from some of the communities hardest hit by the storm and the severe flooding it cost. a once bustling village reduced to a rocky field kobo was home to more than three hundred residents as well as government facilities when disaster struck on the night of march fifteenth residents were sleeping very few of them survived those who did have recounted the horror they experienced. because i was asleep and suddenly woke up to the house destroyed but the house was full of water. the first thing we thought was to rescue the kids. then we realized our eldest child was already dead. after that moment is when we all got swept away by the raging floods. that take this right here used to be a town that is now under rubble storms came up from the mountains and swept through the city and now a lot of people are believed to be under these stones and residents tell me that more than three hundred people could be under this rubble a lot of people want closure of knowing whether they had relatives are still in this place or they were washed away by the river downstream the relatives of the victims have been using whatever tools are at hand to sort through the rocks and rubble they're hoping to recover their loved ones many still don't have final answers about the fate of their families what we're looking for right now is this closure if we know we are really to fly like it would be it will be somehow because right now we don't know we still have that feeling maybe they're separating the some with. but recovering bodies can be extremely difficult and the emotional toll is a men's families with as many as ten members were swept away by the floods leaving few survivors. some of them discovered right see the boards are known leave if you're in the region you know so we have people in the game and seems to. be we have some d.n.a. just a few hours later than just you being buried you know and they do in fact there has been extensive damage to the country's infrastructure and there have even been geographical shifts rivers have formed in residential areas a further sign of how much time recovery is likely to take. privileged has been hearing there to sports now germany national football team is in the midst of a changing of the guard on wednesday their first match of twenty nine thousand and disappointment when there are no look side drew one all and a friendly against serbia later on sunday they kick off their qualifying campaign for the next major tournament euro two thousand and twenty they face neighbors the netherlands and amsterdam the last time the teams met there in october the netherlands celebrated a three no victory now in germany youngsters have a chance to take swift. and a quick reminder of the top stories we're following for you as votes w. . this is deja vu news of live from berlin give us another people's vote hundreds of thousands of protesters filled the streets of london calling on lawmakers to hold a second referendum on the u.k.'s departure from the e.u. also coming up. and the self-proclaimed caliphate crumbles in syria rebel forces force their flag in but who's after expelling the so-called islamic state from the last scrap of territory that still held in the country. i'm michael to have you with us hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets of london to call for a second referendum. organizers hope to convince lawmakers to back a new public vote on whether britain should follow through on plans to leave the european union earlier this week prime minister theresa may and e.u. leaders agreed to postpone to give the u.k. more time to pass a deal. our correspondent charlotte potts spoke to some of the protesters in london earlier we asked you to tell us more about their motives hundreds of thousands of people have been marching here in central london carrying european and u.k. flaxen their number one demand is that they want to put it to the people again they want a second vote a second referendum on whether the u.k. should leave the e.u. with the deal for example that may have negotiated over the past months in brussels or whether the u.k. should indeed stay in the european union after all and i've been talking to people and the number one concern that they have is they say stop the brics that mess they are tired of the political process of these past couple of years they are tired of their politicians and of the government and of the brics it back and forth and that is why they are demanding a second referendum in the hopes that this time around it would be different that the outcome would actually be that the people of the u.k. choose to stay in the european union. that was d. w. charlotte ponce speaking to me earlier from london and it's not just on the streets that britons have been expressing their wish to stop threats it and remain in the e.u. millions of people have signed an online petition calling for a second referendum and the figure is rapidly rising joining me in the studio now to tell us more as you give your porter public fully ileus public break this down for us who exactly is behind this petition and what exactly are they asking for well her name is margaret georgette do as she describes herself as simply a frustrated remain or so she says an average british citizen this petition actually started at the end of february and just to make one thing very clear a petition only needs ten thousand signatures for the government then to respond i just checked a few minutes ago and it stands at over four and a half million people have signed this petition which is an incredible number now if we actually take a look at what the petition actually says it says the government repeatedly claims exiting the e.u. is the will of the people we need to put a stop to this claim by proving the strength of public support now for a maining in the european union a people's vote may not happen so vote now and it seems to have really sort of struck a chord with that many people and it's really sort of gathered momentum in the past number of days i mean understatement it struck a chord with millions of people who exactly are these people well it seems to be sort of you know a cross-section of society i mean we've seen the images there from london obviously many people out on the streets protesting obviously not everybody can get along to voice their concerns or their anger or whatever you want to call it but you know the one of the most critical voices actually isn't even in britain to start with that's key for hushed up but he's you know struck a chord with many many britons he is of course the braggs a coordinator for the european union parliament he said the revolt of revolt against brags that by marching in petitions is the best answer to all kinds of populous and nationalists who promised the undeliverable and then run away so you know pretty. wrong words there from him and then a very well known actor and writer in britain tony robinson said that if everyone who's already signed persuades for more people will get more than seventeen million signatures of course he is making you know reference to the fact that over seventeen million people voted to actually leave the european union and then similar figure to stay in the european union so you know if it's really gathering momentum it'll be interesting to see how many people actually do end up signing this petition in the coming days because he's growing so fast growing but at the same time going around probably one of the most contentious issues we've seen in europe in the last several decades and you tell us a little bit more about some of the critics criticism about this yeah and it's important to note as well that not everybody is happy with this and there have been some very critical voices in fact one born who actually works for a lobby group am in the united states called the congo institute but it's also very . watching the brags that negotiations are closely he writes for the telegraph in britain he said he you're seeing the final and he brags that spaza is to petition the march media around the hopes oppose it shifting opinion revoking being discussed by those who previous head of people's choice was there and he said that that changes coming. more than the fact that it looks like the european union are going to push ahead that britain is going to leave the european union substantially get on with it and then piers morgan he will be very well known to britain's for being a very sort of critical figure he's quite controversial he's a journalist he's on television quite often and he called the march in london the losers march and he said you know he really didn't mince his words and he also signed the petition the losers petition so obviously there's a lot of anger on both sides and like you mentioned before you know this is a very contentious issue and particularly in britain it is really divided opinion and particularly in these days that we're experiencing at the moment is braggs it's sort of very hard to predict to say the least well the losers much many other people would millions of people would we disagree with that public fully allies thanks so much for joining us now to some of the other stories making news around the world. thousands of people have marched in berlin and many other european cities to protest planned reforms to e.u. copyright laws the european parliament is set to adopt the controversial legislation next week it would require companies to take steps to stop internet users from uploading copyrighted material. french authorities have banned yellow vests demonstrations in a large area of paris including around the ark the to beyond this comes in response to the looting rampage on the seans in the last week the anti-government protests continuing for a nineteenth weekend across france. officials in somalia say a gun battle between security forces and al-shabaab fighters in mogadishu has ended leaving at least fifteen people dead islamised militants set off a car bomb before attempting to storm a government building the deputy minister is reportedly among the dead. u.s. backed syrian fighters are claiming victory over the so-called islamic state they say they have expelled the self-proclaimed caliph it from the last remaining territory controlled in syria rebels from the syrian democratic forces fought for weeks to retake the village of baku. the final shred of the kali foot now just a torn up field littered with clothes twisted metal and bodies. on this small patch of land it's obviously a mixtape made the last. bottle full but goes over fifty years of wool syrian forces celebrate the hard won victory. today the syrian democratic forces officially announced the end of all battles and a victory against the group calling itself islamic state that name is now wiped off the map here in northeastern syria. despite vowing to fight to the end thousands of isis members have surrendered. among the unrepentant wives of the jihad. hundreds were killed amid a relentless campaign and the ground assault by u.s. backed forces. remains an insurgent threat of iraq and syria but its territory once stretched across busways of both countries have been whittled down to produce. when the guns fell silent here the caliphate declared almost five years ago. and. became history. victorious kurdish forces have called on the u.s. to keep troops in syria if the u.s. pulls out their war it is only a matter of time until the ice menace grows again. an operation is underway off the coast of norway to evacuate thirteen hundred people from a cruise ship that lost engine power in stormy conditions the viking sky ship managed to anchor about two kilometers off the coast near the city of mold no region emergency services are using helicopters to airlift passengers and crew to safety weather services report rough seas and winds of up to seventy kilometers an hour evacuation is expected to take several hours so. i'm joined on the line now by borg hill with the joint rescue coordination center for southern norway. yes how she how she a rescue operation going. so far we have rescued evacuated eighty seven people so it takes some time because we can only use helicopters because of the rough conditions. but we are still working to step in last ship and to get the engines working again so it can go by its own engine to a safe harbor you say that you are using helicopters that is the one helicopters that several helicopters are going to literally or are you literally hoisting passengers one by one. yes and we are using four helicopters that that assessment yes we can use on this short route from the ship just to show and so that's taking a lot of time of course well our understanding it's pretty clear that though the waters are not calm waters is the weather problems for the rescuers. is that if the weather had been better we could have u.s. ships or rescue vessels but now we have to use helicopters. so so how long you mention the fact that this would take hours are you at the point and you can actually anticipate how many hours we talking bout through the night here. truth and i think we will be working the truth and not going into something as well but at parallel we are using. we are using it time westphal to get close to the ship so we can secure it even more and maybe then we can get the engines going so we don't have to react to that direct all the passengers but they can go with the ship if the and you are working again i wonder what's being done for the passengers who are being airlifted. they have been taken into the center and from there they are being go by fast. it in there is. to the hotel there and it will be taken care of we as a rescue center our job is to rescue them on shore and that people take care of them. bore kill elgar and with the joint rescue coordination center for sewer the southern norway thanks for joining us and good luck in those efforts. thank you sports now germany's football team begins its euro two thousand and twenty qualification this weekend and they don't come much tougher than an away match against of all people the dutch coach yogen love this hoping a shake up will cast off the gloom that has surrounded the team since the world the showdown might shed first light on whether they're on the right path or on the road to nowhere. germany's national team took a break from their training pitch in wolfsburg to visit the towns of both swag and assembly line germany have been far from a well oiled machine lately they need to click into gear ahead of their tough euro two thousand and twenty qualifying class against the netherlands coach you he loves under pressure he's tried to remedy dismal performances in the world cup and nations lead by dropping mainstays thomas miller jerome tang and mats hummels but their recent one one draw with serbia showed his new young team need some fine tuning the experience of manuel neuer marco rice and midfielder tony cross will be needed against the dutch. some of course we know that everything doesn't happen overnight but we're all ambitious we want to win every game whoever is on the pitch . and to concede that soon sunday's match will be germany's third against the netherlands in seven months with a dutch victory and a draw in the other two games this from the it's always an interesting july in germany plays against the netherlands and will show the according level of my savation. as a child i used to go to the netherlands on holiday when you could say i've grown up without rivalry. so it's going to be a slice encounter. nice to have been the focus now for germany is on exploiting their strengths and finding the winning formula to beat their dutch neighbors only a victory will give the new look squad a much needed boost to their confident. yes. and a reminder of the top stories we're following for you hundreds of thousands of people have marched through london to call for a second referendum and they want lawmakers to back a new public vote on whether britain should follow through on plans to leave the european union. that's all for g.w.
