Men and women of the U.S. Space Force are henceforth called Guardians, Vice President Mike Pence announced Friday.
And the newest Guardian was sworn in from the International Space Station. NASA astronaut Mike Hopkins transferred from the U.S. Air Force to the Space Force while in microgravity.
"I think it might actually be the first in-orbit transfer in military history," Pence said Friday during a news conference.
The announcements come one year after President Donald Trump signed the National Defense Authorization Act on Dec. 20, 2019, creating the Space Force as the sixth branch of military.

The United States Armed Forces have soldiers, sailors, airmen, guardsmen, and Marines. Now, the latest branch of the military has determined what it's going to call those that fill its ranks. Henceforth, members of the United States Space Force will be known as Guardians. The branch's official Twitter account announced the news Friday afternoon, saying it consulted with space professionals and members of the general public for over a year before making the final decision. Furthermore, the Space Force also announced its motto as "Semper Supra," a Latin saying for "Always Above."
