Engineering students at South Dakota State University are now among six finalists globally in a NASA competition to design a rover to explore the coldest regions of the moon.

The challenge is part of NASA’s mission to develop new technology that could support a sustained human presence on the moon by the end of the decade.

Judges from NASA and other experts have selected a proposal from a group of South Dakota State University engineering students to compete with 14 other teams in the next stage of the $3.5 million Break the Ice Lunar Challenge.

SDSU students are one of 15 finalist teams working to build prototype rovers meant to extract ice from the moon for NASA's Break the Ice Lunar Challenge.
