a massive drug bust in arizona. authorities say a powerful men can drug cartel is using a native american reservation to smuggle drugs across the border. mark potter has the exclusive story. reporter: in a massive show of force, nearly 200 agents and tribal police begin an arrest sweep in southern arizona. 46 people are accused of working for a mexican drug cartel that allegedly smuggles hundreds of tons of marijuana through native american land. the reservation sits along the mexican border near tucson, arizona, the size of connecticut, but sparsely populated. for most of the remote 75 mile long border there, this fence is all that separates mexico from the united states. typically a smuggler smuggling group will move dope through this desert in either a vehicle or in a human smuggling
hope for the best. when this tornado hit the ground here coming through this county, it would hop along six to eight miles and this is the area toward the end of its path. we re looking at a path of destruction that s anywhere from a half mile to three quarters of a mile wide. and all over the county, as this storm came down and went back up and came down again, destruction like this all over the place. and just even everything in its path, just looking at this tree, completely ripped up by its roots here, but you look at the tree itself, look at the foliage here. all the spring foliage on this tree, just ripped completely off of it. that gives you an idea of the force behind these tornadoes as they came through here. but again, 11 people killed here. about 50 injured. we re looking at about 85 homes that are either destroyed or badly damaged. again, had this is a very rural county. sparsely populated. and when wie look at that, we r
reporter: bertie county is a rural county, very sparsely populated. the fact that you have 11 fatalities from this storm should tell you just how powerful this storm was when it roared through here. take a look at the examples all around us. this is a telephone poll right here. it s covered with mud on one side where the wind was coming through, snapped off at the base. you know how tough those poles are. look at this tree right here, completely ripped out of the ground. all the branchs are broken. every single leaf that was on there from the spring has now been ripped off. and the human toll here, this is a good example. this home right here, completely blown off of its foundation. there s not one single scrap of metal, wood, or personal belongings left at that location. that tells you, as this storm was coming in, that the people caught in its path found that there was truly no safe place. as you said, it s sparsely populated county where 700
the weekend. the funnel cloud on the left side of your screen, there is just one of the 230 twisters reported. the death toll rising overnight to 45. half of those deaths reported in north carolina and david mattingly is live for us this morning in north carolina. david, good morning to you. reporter: good morning. 11 of those deaths happening right here in this county, north carolina. it is a very rural county, very sparsely populated. the fact that 11 people were killed here should tell you how ferocious these tornadoes were as they ripped across the landscape. you can see what they left behind. everything that was in front of them was torn completely apart. tossed all about the landscape. and this happening over an expanse of about a half mile wide, extending 6 to 8 miles across the county. you can see some of the houses off in the distance. every bit of trees, they were
