Scientists from the city-based Wildlife Conservation Society–India and
National Centre for Biological Sciences (
NCBS) along with other universities have, for the first time, developed a scientifically robust method to estimate the Asiatic wild dog
dhole population.
The dhole is among the
carnivore species that are threatened with extinction and its population numbers unknown. This large carnivore is found in the forests of India and till now, there were no methods available to reliably estimate
dhole populations. With this new study, scientists developed a method to estimate dhole numbers using genetic information and advanced population models.
