Outsight Introduces the First LiDAR Pre-processing Software Engine

Outsight Introduces the First LiDAR Pre-processing Software Engine The easiest way to use LiDAR LiDAR technology is a strong emerging trend in the Computer Vision landscape: over $3 billion have been invested in the Hardware aspect of LiDAR technology since 2019 and only the top five American LiDAR Hardware Manufacturers are expected to grow from less than $150 million sales in total in 2020 to over $4 billion in 2024. However, effectively using LiDAR data in real-time is a complex, expensive and long endeavor even for the best 3D expert engineers. Assessing and selecting the right hardware among the profusion of dozens of manufacturers without any standard makes it even more challenging and threatens to slow down market adoption.

Three Weinberg College faculty elected to National Academy of Sciences

Northwestern Now Dedre Gentner, Thomas McDade and Michael R. Wasielewski recognized for achievements in original research Three faculty members of Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern psychologist Dedre Gentner, biological anthropologist Thomas McDade and chemist Michael R. Wasielewski have been elected to the prestigious National Academy of Sciences. Membership in the academy is one of the highest honors given to a scientist in the United States. Gentner, McDade and Wasielewski are among 120 new members and 30 international members selected in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. They will be inducted at the academy’s annual meeting next year.

SLAMcore Offers Out-of-the-Box Dense 2 5D Mapping for Fast, Accurate Robot Navigation

SLAMcore Offers ‘Out-of-the-Box’ Dense 2.5D Mapping for Fast, Accurate Robot Navigation SLAMcore, a leader in Spatial Intelligence for autonomous robot location and mapping, has added new dense 2.5D mapping capabilities to its latest software release, which is available now. Robots require maps of their surroundings and the objects within it to navigate effectively - these maps can include point clouds, 2D flat maps, 2.5D dense maps (with heights), 3D maps and semantic maps which identify objects (people/tables/chairs/windows etc). One of the main challenges of robot mapping is that it requires significant compute power, processing time and memory to create maps (especially 2.5D and 3D). Most Robotic systems today use only flat 2D distance maps to run efficiently in real-time.

One of the main challenges of robot mapping is that it requires significant compute power, processing time and memory to create these maps. In response, SLAMcore has developed software that uses stereo cameras and inertial sensors to build 2.5D height maps in real-time. The occupied space is represented as a series of columns of different heights which show what space is filled. Using these rich 2.5D maps, robots and autonomous devices know where objects are and can safely p
