Speaker misinterpreting rules of procedure to protect staff: Opposition

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Coming down heavily on Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan for allegedly misinterpreting Rule 165 of the ‘Rules of Procedure’, Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala said on Thursday that the Speaker was trying to sabotage the law to save his own face.
The criticism comes a day after Legislative Assembly Secretary S V Unnikrishnan Nair shot off a letter to the Customs, citing Rule 165 to state that the Speaker’s permission had to be sought if a legislative assembly employee was to be served with a legal process. Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Assembly Speaker s Assistant Private Secretary K Ayyappan finally appeared before the Customs on Friday to depose regarding the gold smuggling and US dollar smuggling cases.
The agency had summoned him for questioning on January 5 but he did not comply and instead replied that he cannot appear on a phone call. The Customs officials then sent him an email and directed him to come for questioning, but he responded that he was busy owing to the Budget session and could not come.

The Kerala Assembly session started today on a turbulent note with the Opposition boycotting the Governor s speech, raising slogans against the Speaker and the Chief Minister. Congress-led UDF MLAs shouted slogans against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan, demanding their resignations over alleged links to various corporation cases.
Reacting to the slogan shouting inside the house, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan was heard saying, I am doing my constitutional duty. It is expected that no obstruction shall be created while the Governor is performing his Constitutional duty.

Thiruvananthapuram: The opposition has raised sharp criticism against Kerala AssemblySpeaker P Sreeramakrishnan after the assembly secretary issued a letter to the Customs informing that they must seek prior permission of the speaker to quiz his assistant private secretary.
Customs had summoned Speaker’s assistant private secretary K Ayyappan for interrogation on Wednesday over the probe into dollar smuggling case. The opposition has condemned the move to interrupt the interrogation of the PA of the Speaker.
“It’s unfortunate that the protection of legislative privileges is misused by Speaker @sreeramkrishnan to bypass or avoid due process of law to protect his PA. This is mere belittling the stature & dignity of the Legislature itself. ‘Is something rotten in the State of Denmark ?,” tweeted Congress MLA KC Joseph.
