Place North West | Manchester science museum unveils £5m exhibition space

Dan Whelan The 8,000 sq ft gallery is located on the lower ground floor of the Science and Industry Museum’s grade two-listed New Warehouse.  Funded largely by a £3.8m grant from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the £5m project is the first element of long-term strategy by the museum – known as Mosi – to restore its historic estate.  Designed by architectural practice Carmody Groarke, work to create the Special Exhibitions Gallery was carried out by contractor HH Smith & Sons.  Mosi director Sally MacDonald said: “This year has brought home to all of us how fundamentally science shapes our lives. As we all rebuild personally, socially and culturally, and look forward to better things in 2021, we can’t wait to share this new exhibition space.”

London s Science Museum reopens as an NHS vaccination centre this week

11 shares Thousands of people are expected to be vaccinated in the museum each week by NHS medical professionals, supported by staff from the museum.   It s the first national museum in the UK to host a vaccination centre.      It s wonderful to see part of the Science Museum repurposed for this country s most pressing task in a generation, vaccinating the adult population, said Sir Ian Blatchford, the museum s director.  The museum on Exhibition Road in South Kensington. Due to the latest coronavirus restrictions, the museum is temporarily closed Uniquely, our museum can both tell the story of how vaccination has saved millions of lives, and also play a part in ensuring vaccines protect the nation from Covid-19.
