The Polish Rider first appeared in the Summer 2016 fiction issue of the
New Yorker. If a short story were capable of ambition and could dream, it might dream of exactly this: a second life as a slim hardcover volume published by MACK, a UK-based small press, with embossed lettering on the cover, the text accompanied by full-colour illustrations printed on fine paper.
The Polish Rider is a meta-fictionalized take on a real-life event that occurred to Lerner and his friend, the painter Anna Ostoya: just before a gallery showing of her paintings, Ostoya accidentally left two of the canvases in an Uber in New York City. The story describes the efforts of an unnamed narrator (Lerner) and the artist (renamed Sonia) to recover the lost paintings. The New Alphabet Explores And Reimagines Communicative Hierarchies
The New Alphabet is a series from publisher Spector Books that explores and ultimately counters and reconceptualizes the functionalization of languages like DNA, binary code, the human body, and music playlists. Over 25 volumes, these hierarchies are deconstructed and assessed, old use cases get discarded, and they record alphabets-meanings become altered and transformed, all using graphics, colors, patterns, textures, and prose.
Throughout the series, the volumes themselves become malleable elements you can arrange to form ideas, sentences, and concepts, an alphabet in and of itself using the end covers. Word clusters, gradients, and other elements come designed to form a bespoke grammatic structure within itself, leading the reader to explore the overarching concept of alphabet-like constructs. Essays exploring the central themes of each volume compliment the graphics and illustrations.
Key creatives: Steffen Knöll and Sven Tillack.
Career path: After completing a three-year apprenticeship at an ad agency, Tillack decided that there was still a lot he wanted to learn and applied to study communication design at Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart (ABK, or Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design.) Having always wanted to study architecture, Knöll for reasons unknown even to him applied for communication design as a backup plan in case the architecture program at ABK didn’t accept him. Despite the fact that an architecture career could have still been in the cards, he decided to stay in design, which he attributes to the high rents in Zurich, Switzerland. The pair worked separately as freelancers for around seven years before launching Studio Tillack Knöll. Now, they also hold teaching positions at ABK.
