spending, but creating a problem that could dramatically raise our interest costs for years to come. so just to make this clear, because i think the debt ceiling is really hard for people to understand. this is money that these are the bills we need to pay because congress has already approved this spending. am i right, christine? congress has already approved this? now they have to pay the bills. is that right? that s absolutely right. they re using the debt ceiling. this has happened before in the past where you use the debt ceiling to try to get other spending initiatives along the way. the fact is, there s no budget. the problem is, there s no budget. the united states congress has not passed a budget since 2009. the problem is not the debt ceiling. the debt ceiling is the symptom. the disease is the lack of a budget. and they re fighting over this thing that could send some very bad signals to the world. china overnight, foreign ministry making comments about how they hope t
care law more than 30 times, they now want to tie it to budget bills and the budget battles that are going to happen in the fall. that s now causing a lot of heartburn and really a lot of division within the republican party, so what is the strategy then? that s a great question because the republicans are out of power, they don t have any one leader like the democrats have with the president. even when the democrats disagree with the president they tend to mute that because you have one leader. republicans are standing on principle whether it s opposing obama care or opposing other spending initiatives the president wants. some are saying let s put our initiatives in the spending bill so the president signs a bill that would repeal or delay part of obama care. the president is never going to do that so you do have republicans richard burr, conservative senator from north carolina telling politico it s the dumbest idea he ever heard to have the prospect of a government shutdown. yest
administration make big pushes on immigration and gun control. but the economy and jobs are still really top of mind for many americans. what is the president s plan to get more americans working? i think you ll hear him talk about new spending initiatives. he ll talk about infrastructure, job training, that sort of thing. the big problem there is you ve got house republicans not inclined to approve any more new spending plans. that s going to be tough for him to get through. i think he s going to try to raise the pressure on them to actually do something in terms of, you know, spending on infrastructure and job training and other stuff he brought up previously in his administration. it s a tough sell with house republicans. do we expect to hear any major policy initiatives on taxes or the budget? yeah. i think he ll talk about his balanced approach to deficit reduction. he ll talk about matching spending cuts with new revenues, particularly from tax reform. i think in particular
