A bitter ex once accused me of going from enfant terrible to grande dame without once being a grown-up, and the older I get the more I think they were on to something. As someone who was a professional Voice Of Youth as a teenager on the pop press, it’s funny being a sexgenarian with a cushy billet on this august organ; I like to think of the dismayed faces of my many detractors, whose one consolation as they observed their own less-than-stellar careers down the years was that I’d be dead of a drugs overdose by 40.
