Coyote Ugly starts setting up shop in new East Village space
Coyote Ugly the famed, decades-old East Village spot that shut down last fall due to failed rent negotiations is coming back to life. Neighborhood site EVGrieve reports that Coyote Ugly signage has been hung indoors at 233 East 14th Street, between Second and Third Avenues, signaling the bar’s upcoming return to the neighborhood.
The news follows an earlier EVGrieve report that noted Coyote Ugly which shot to international fame following a blockbuster 2001 movie based on the bar had applied for a liquor license in that space last September. After Coyote Ugly’s closure was announced last September, owner Liliana Lovell said the bar would reappear in the neighborhood at a later date, and this version would be “a little bit nicer” with “better bathrooms.” Eater has reached out for more information on the upcoming opening.
