The email to the City Council was like so many other comments and reactions on social media and elsewhere last week after Mayor Emily Larson proposed investing $24 million into long-troubled Spirit Mountain.
“After year upon year of having to bail Spirit Mountain out, it seems way more fiscally responsible to sell it now to a private entity. We will still reap all the benefits of the tourism it brings with hotel usage and shopping and restaurant usage,” urged the note from a Duluth resident. The email also pointed out “the dumpiness Spirit Mountain represents” and concluded with: “We strongly urge you not to bother with this newest and latest scheme.”

DULUTH, Minn. – Duluth Mayor Emily Larson announced during a Thursday press conference her recommendations for the next steps in supporting Spirit Mountain Recreational Area.
The mayor’s proposed plan includes launching a $24 million capital reinvestment program funded 50% by state bonding, 25% by the City from tourism taxes, and 25% by Spirit Mountain.
“Now is the time to do this with Spirit Mountain,” Mayor Larson said. “No more Band-Aids. It’s ready for a good fix. There is a saying, “If you can’t get out of it, get into it.” So, let’s get into it.”
The capital projects would improve the economic impact, community benefit, and financial performance of Spirit Mountain.

The press event, held at Spirit Mountain at 2 pm on Thursday afternoon, offered recommendations based on a report from the Spirit Mountain Task Force and consulting firm SE Group. The report explored how to bring better financial footing and improvements to the recreation area, which has amassed a sizable debt in recent years.
While Spirit Mountain did post a profit last year, despite the pandemic, the recreation area has received a series of loans from the City of Duluth as it has dealt with financial challenges in recent years. Those loans were actually one of the subject of Mayor Larson's recommendations in Thursday's presentation. As she explained, she felt a number of 'Band-Aids" have been placed on the Spirit Mountain issue, and she feels this plan will create a permanent fix for the venue.
