Returnal tips and tricks to help you get through the brutal early stages

The weapon proficiency system is key to success in Returnal. Each run, Selene will start with a proficiency of zero. Killing enemies increases the meter at the bottom left of the screen, as does collecting the various blue calibrators littered throughout the world. Raising Adrenaline to level 4 also gives a boost to the proficiency increase rate. So what does the weapon proficiency level mean? It represents the minimum level of weapon you’ll find in the world. If it’s at zero, then the chests you open will have weapons at level zero (or sometimes higher). That means it’s often best to ignore chests to begin with and progress with your standard pistol. Raise the proficiency level a couple of times and then teleport back to the weapon chest to find a gun at a higher level than you would have before. Keep an eye on your proficiency level and consider when is the best time to open weapon chests.

Tips For Playing Returnal

Tips For Playing Returnal Returnal follows suit. Things start out grim as you take your first steps on Atropos, learning to dodge, jump and parse enemy patterns. Eventually the situation improves once Selene gets access to cool xenotech: Rifles that automatically reload, parasites that make your health bars enormous and buff your armour, and weapon traits that obliterate enemies in seconds. But this is a roguelike. And to consistently reach that point where you’re thinking about the next three or four rooms ahead, as opposed to how you can survive the next encounter, some planning is required. Let’s get stuck in.

Returnal Review - In My Restless Dreams, I See That House...

Housemarque Housemarque is a team that I've long considered pioneers of twin-stick shooters and sidescrolling action games for the PlayStation family of consoles for as long as I can remember. When I heard that they were revealing a proper third-person shooter, I was immediately intrigued. As more and more information came out about their upcoming project, including the addition of All You Need Is Kill-esque time loops, my demand couldn't be understated. Over the past week, all I can think about is Returnal and how much Housemarque has delivered on their promises to create something exceptionally unique for the PlayStation 5.

Returnal Deserves Better Than A $100-Plus Price Tag

Returnal Deserves Better Than A $100-Plus Price Tag Share Returnal. Everything was going well. I’d cleared most of the rooms on the first floor. I’d taken very little damage, a crucial factor in Returnal: the less damage you take, the more you can increase your maximum HP from health drops. I’d gotten the upgrades I wanted. My melee attack was stronger. I’d gotten the juicy 25 per cent upgrade to health, perhaps the most valuable attribute to any Returnal run. I’d gotten some decent weaponry with some good attributes. Everything was going right. I figured, why not give the first boss a shot again? I’d already beaten the first boss, a tall, lithe alien with lasers thicker than bone. I did the math in my head: the stronger melee attack should make the first and second phases pass by relatively quickly. The extra HP should buffer me nicely for the third act, when the larger AOE attacks come up.

Housemarque details rogue-like sci-fi shooter Returnal's loop mechanics and combat

And a glimpse at "risky" Parasite buffs. Updated on 18 January 2021 Developer Housemarque, known for the celebrated likes of Resogun and Nex Machina, has shared new details of its upcoming PS5-exclusive sci-fi shooter Returnal, this time focussing on the looping structure and combat driving the game's moody, rogue-like action. Returnal sees Housemarque moving away from the small but perfectly formed arcade experiences that have earned the studio huge acclaim over the years, and instead opts for something a little more blockbuster in outlook. The end result, which follows space scout protagonist Selene as she attempts to escape a hellish loop of endless resurrection while stranded on a deadly planet at the edge of the galaxy, blends third-person action and platform elements with a strong focus on narrative.

New Returnal Trailer Highlights Its Combat

New Returnal Trailer Highlights Its Combat While there has been a fair amount of information released recently about the upcoming video game Returnal from developer Housemarque for the PlayStation 5, today the company has highlighted the game's combat and weapons specifically with a new trailer. While the game's weapons all start off a certain way, players can then further modify and upgrade them, stacking different traits to create unique methods of taking on enemies across the game's hostile landscape. "The game features a number of base weapons that are augmented as you play," Housemarque Creative Director Harry Krueger says in a new PlayStation blog. "For example, the living Spitmaw Blaster weapon starts as a shotgun archetype you all know and love. As you progress, you’ll unlock and add on various Weapon Traits, each providing a unique gameplay modifier to the base weapon’s behavior. These Weapon Traits are custom tailored for each gun type – so your Spitmaw Blaster might gain exploding shells or generate acid pools upon impact; while the Electropylon Driver might extract extra loot from enemies, or generate shields for the player. These Weapon Traits will also stack, so the combined effects can lead to many surprising results that can have unique advantages and playstyles to explore."
