States are revitalizing trails in parks and on public lands, modernizing campgrounds and lodges and purchasing all-terrain chairs so people with disabilities aren't excluded from outdoor experiences.

Many states, including Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin, are spending millions of federal, state and private dollars to update outdoor recreation infrastructure to make it more accessible for people with disabilities.

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the need to make outdoor recreation more accessible, said Mike Passo, executive director of American Trails.

The rural enclave started out as a single homestead but after uranium was discovered in the area and a mine opened in 1957, a drove of workers descended. But now its a far cry from its heyday.

A crowd of several hundred people is expected to gather at Split Rock Lighthouse on Friday for a memorial ceremony and beacon-lighting to mark the 48th anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Minnesota is part of a multifaceted statewide push to expand access to the outdoors.
