A new mobile carrier is at the center of attention in Korea, while skepticism remains high over the ability of the new telecom company to meet the governments expectations of promoting competition in the country’s highly monopolized mobile carrier market.

A local consortium was selected as the new operator of the 28 gigahertz (GHz) band of the fifth-generation network (5G) in South Korea on Wednesday, the science ministry said, becoming the countrys fourth mobile carrier.
