The Wichita Board of Education voted 4-3 this week to put a question on the Nov. 8 ballot. It will ask voters whether they want to change to a district voting model — the way city, county and state representatives are elected — or keep the current system.

Students in USD 259 are returning to the classrooms Monday morning where masks are optional.

The Wichita school board voted 4-3 to end the district’s mask requirement, citing dramatic drops in the number of COVID-19 cases and quarantines over recent weeks.

The Wichita school district requires face coverings for anyone 3 or older inside district buildings. Board members Stan Reeser and Sheril Logan said they supported keeping the mandate at least through the winter months.

After multiple schools have had to close their doors in the past few weeks due to COVID issues, the Wichita public schools board of education is looking into different options to keep kids learning.

The Wichita Board of Education met Tuesday after last weeks meeting was canceled because the three new members would not wear a mask.

The Wichita school district is warning parents that temporary school closures may be necessary because so many teachers are out sick amid a rise in COVID-19 cases, while some Kansas City-area cities are introducing new mask mandates.
