Quantum Reality — does mass exist? Ever since the 1960s Double Slit Experiment, reality has not been the same The writer is a geopolitical analyst. She also writes at globaltab.net and tweets @AneelaShahzad Ever since the 1960s Double Slit Experiment (DSE), reality has not been the same. The fact that single electrons shot through a setting of two slits, accumulatively made a wave-pattern on the screen, but when a beam of detector light was put across the slits, the wave function of the elec...

UNM researchers study polarization and spin dynamics in electron storage rings June 16, 2021 A group of University of New Mexico researchers are working on two Department of Energy (DOE) research grants that investigate the dynamics of spin-polarized electron beams in existing and planned high energy storage rings. Research Professor Klaus Heinemann and Emeritus Professor Jim Ellison of UNMs Department of Mathematics and Statistics have been leading this six-year, $1.6 million project which...

When trying to explain what motivates me as a physicist, the film A Passage to India (1984) comes to mind. Based on the play by Santha Rama Rau, adapted from the novel by E M Forster, it describes the fallout from a rape case in the fictional city of Chandrapore, during the British Raj in India in the 1920s. What keeps the viewer’s attention is the subtlety of the relationships between the characters – particularly the fragile friendship between the man accused of the rape, Dr Aziz, and an...

“There are two types of people who will tell you that you cannot make a difference in this world: those who are afraid to try and those who are afraid you will succeed.” -Ray Goforth

Physicists have proved that a subatomic particle can switch into its antiparticle alter-ego and back again, in a new discovery revealed recently.

A subatomic particle has been found switching between matter and antimatter, in Large Hadron Collider data. It turns out an unfathomably tiny weight difference between two particles could have saved the universe from annihilation soon after it began.

Perhaps dark matter is hard to observe because it interacts via a new, unknown force, a novel new theory proposes

Dark energy has been described as everything from a fifth force to a new form of matter, but so far, no direct evidence has been found of its existence. “I have absolutely no clue what dark energy is,” says Noble Prize winning physicist Adam Riess . “Dark energy appears strong enough to push the entire universe – yet its source is unknown, its location is unknown and its physics are highly speculative.” “It’s the big elephant in the room,” says Claudia de Rham, a theoretic...
