Neutralize that? >> well, they are probably using long range standoff weapons which theyre, but at least when those missiles come close, those air defense systems will pick up on them. shoot the bombers down. whether you have a sight range of 100 miles it picks up missiles inbound and it hits the missiles as they are inbound to the target it doesnt make a difference they shoot the missiles 500 or 600, or 700 miles away. engage them as they get closer to the target. thats what the value of those ...

Situation on the ground. they say that the ukrainian air force and air defense forces are continuing to, effectively, defend ukrainian airspace. russia has failed to gain control of the air and is largely relying on standoff weapons, launch from the relative safety of russian airspace to strike targets within ukraine. gaining control of the air, was one of the principal objectives for the opening days of the conflict, and there continued failure to do so has significantly blunted their operation...

Soldiers are interested in self-preservation, sabotaging their own equipment. you have senior generals now being flown in from moscow and getting killed, doing the work, the work that captains and majors should be doing. and what do you what do you make of the u.s. intel saying these russian that we saw in the convoy, these russian soldiers would be could be encircling ukraine sometime in the next 72 hours if that is in fact going to happen? do you believe they will fire missiles in there trying...

Ukraine. there are not a lot of fixed wing aircraft in the air over ukraine, and its still dangerous over that air. the russians are flying somewhere in the neighborhood of 150 or 200 sorties or flights every day, but the vast majority of them are over russia, and sometimes they come into the ukrainian airspace and will conduct a strike or two, and the things we are seeing in the devastating photos and video out of mariupol and kharkiv, the majority is from cruise missiles, standoff weapons or a...

Cover air space if its done in normal ways but there are a lot of things that happen using standoff weapons. for example, when the russians attacked the facility, training facility near lvi virv near the polish border, they were using aircraft flying out of an area from the black sea right here. those areas are outside of normal ukrainian air space and if the no fly zone or whatever were calling it does not cover that, then it wont impact those kinds of events and the russians have been doing th...

You will not see it very well. there is a lot of smoke to the horizon there. if you look past this apartment complex, its pretty close shells are outgoing or impacting. rocket fire out not too close. but we are hearing impact on a constant basis. what you are seeing is the battle of kyiv unfolding in this area with this rocket landing here. and certainly the battle going on not too far from where we are right now. as you have noted, john, that battle, the russians appear to not be making very mu...

Surround the city, that did not happen. kharkiv, also tried to surround that, that did not happen. i believe one of their initial goals was to go to the city of dnipro and that did not happen. theyre threatening it from the air and with standoff weapons but theyre not threatening it with troops on the ground. they did achieve some of their objectives in this area right in the southeast along the sea. they were able to do some of that and you mention kherson. and its pretty clear that city right ...

Square. theres still a tank barrier setup there and of course check points around the city. there did seem to be few people on the streets, coffee shops opening not just yet but there are people coming back out. and you can feel there are people who believe they have that little room to breathe. you were alluding to the fact the russians are still using these standoff weapons as the u.s. calls them, longer range weapons. there was of course that attack on the fuel depot that took place just to t...

Is trying to separate them a little bit as well. and i think wone of the concern is that that message would be lost and it is more about the president versus president putin. >> and just as president biden was walking out to deliver this major speech, the mayor of lviv in western ukraine confirmed another strike on the city just about 60 miles from the polish border. so is the sense that putin is trying to send a message? >> i think that there certainly might have been a message in that that air...

Theres been a lot more activity, exponentially more activity over the last several days. ironically, youve been reporting that some people are starting to return to kyiv because they get the sense that it may be at least moderately safer day by day than it was a few days ago. >> reporter: thats absolutely right. of course that has to do with the fact that the russian army is being pushed back by ukrainian forces around the capital of kyiv. i think also the situation that don is in right now, tha...
