The nation’s best-loved portrait prize - the Archibald - has been described as Australia’s artistic equivalent to Melbourne Cup. Why is it so perennially popular?

More than 6000 portraits have been hung in the Archibald prize since it began 100 years ago. Tracking them all down to choose 100 works for a special exhibition was curator Natalie Wilson’s first challenge.
