Sir For more than 43 years the Stardust families sought truth and justice. For much of that time it must have seemed that the families with grief and love in their hearts walked alone, except for the few who stood by them.
The Stardust was a disaster waiting to happen due to the persistent failure of successive governments to deal with fire safety in buildings to which the public had access notably discos, hotels, pubs and nightclubs. And much of the blame for this lack of action lay with senior officials at the Department of Local Government.
The Government will commit to a redress scheme in due course for the families of the victims of the Stardust fire tragedy that killed 48 people, the Sunday Independent can reveal.
Wednesday’s editorial suggests measures introduced by Justice Minister Helen McEntee, including longer sentences for knife crimes, are a show of toughness (‘Why the long wait for Government to get tough on crime?’, April 17).
