Hi-Liner Cross Country Prepares for State Meet

Whenever Dashawn Stovall steps onto a football field, he is fueled by flesh, bone and a full tank of emotion. He carries the pigskin and makes tackles for Thomas Jefferson High School, but also for his slain brother, Davonte, who was murdered in 2019 in a shooting on Selden Street.

As the dynamic Dinwiddie High quarterback, K’ymon Pope was all about leading his team into the end zone. Now as the Virginia State University roving safety, he’s all about keeping rival squads out of the end zone.

With Rashaud Cherry’s steady hands on the steering wheel, Thomas Jefferson High School has its GPS set on “all the way to the top.” The Vikings have taken off so fast you wonder if they’ve left patches of burned rubber along Richmond’s West End roadways.

Retired South Carolina State Sen. John W. Matthews Jr. and his wife Mary have donated $50,000 to South Carolina State University Public Service and Agriculture (PSA).

The Washington Commanders’ team colors are mostly burgundy and gold. But when the NFL squad opens its season Sept. 2 at FedEx Field, you may see sprinkles of Highland Springs High School’s black and gold in the stands.
