UAE offers to mediate Nile dam dispute in name of Red Sea security

May 13, 2021 On April 24, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Cairo. During their meeting, both leaders discussed the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam dispute, which has pitted Egypt and Sudan against Ethiopia. Mohammed bin Zayed’s discussions with Sisi on the dam issue reflect the UAE’s growing interest in ameliorating this dispute. On March 26, the UAE formally offered to mediate the dam dispute and on March 31, the UAE invited the foreign ministers of Sudan, Ethiopia and Egypt for talks on the dam in Abu Dhabi. The UAE wishes to facilitate a deal that would allow Ethiopia to fill the dam and simultaneously ensure that the downstream countries, Egypt and Sudan, maintain sufficient access to Nile River water.

Virtual Lag B Omer-Iftar Celebration Promotes Jewish-Muslim Interfaith Dialogue, Coexistence

“Both Sefirat Ha’omer and Ramadan share a common theme as they are a time for reflection,” Rabbi Abadie told The Algemeiner by email. “As we celebrate the Lag B’Omer holiday and Iftar dinner together as the AGJC with our Muslim neighbors, it’s a time for us to reflect on where the region is today and the role that interfaith diplomacy has played in getting us here.”  The Thursday event began with Abadie explaining the holiday of Lag B’Omer, followed by Muslim peace activist Loay Alshareef, who talked about Ramadan. Abadie told viewers that “from the difficult times to the happier times … I think the lesson is first and foremost accepting each other’s differences [and] tolerating each others opinions by respecting them, and recognizing we are all children of one God, one supreme being [and] one father. We are all members of the same family and that is certainly a cause to celebrate.”

Play audio 1XChange playback rate from 1 to 1 Mute audio The U.S position on the JCPOA is clear; we are ready to return to the agreement if Iran returns to full compliance with its nuclear commitments. And as demonstrated by our participation in ongoing talks in Vienna, we are working with international partners to determine whether or not that is possible, she said. Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY), who also serves as chairman of the House Foreign Relations Committee, echoed the remarks calling an Iran armed with a nuclear weapon unacceptable, and adding that the best way to achieve this is via diplomacy and that he supports the Biden administration s efforts to secure a compliance-for-compliance return to the Iran nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of AcJCPOA. Neither we nor Israel can afford to begin a march toward war. That should be the very last possible option.
