In keeping with the darkness of Hans Christian Andersen’s 1837 fairy tale, this adaptation is meditative, intense and sometimes even grim. It is also unfailingly beautiful.
Those who come to the ballet will find it thrilling and will want to read the novel upon which it is based. Indeed, it is a tale for our contemporary time.
The production not only ideally captures the mix of the comical, satirical, fantastical and romantic aspects of Miguel de Cervantes’ story, but with its beautiful sets, costumes, projections, puppets and aerial tricks it also is an ideal showcase for the Joffrey.
