When Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen started his first horse, Track Ambassador, at Ruidoso Downs in 1986, he did so with storied racetracks like Saratoga Race Course in the back of his mind as places of legend, hoping to one day make it to the Spa to leave his mark at the nation’s oldest sporting venue.

Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen has been a part of many historic moments at Saratoga Race Course, including the memorable victory by Rachel Alexandra in the 2009 Woodward (G1) to be become the first filly to win that event; and a record-setting win with Stellar Tap in August 2021 to break the all-time win record for North American trainers.

It is also where the first points prep for the 2022 Kentucky Derby – the Iroquois Stakes – will be run Saturday night. Since the race has never produced a Derby winner, it becomes an even better bet when horseplayers handicap it on its own merits. On that score, it may come as a surprise to learn who among trainers has dominated the Iroquois in recent years.
