State reviewing nursing home Wareham Healthcare’s closure plan

WAREHAM – The state Dept. of Public Health is evaluating nursing home Wareham Healthcare’s closure plan, which is targeted for July 28.
The DPH can OK the plan or comment on it. Wareham Healthcare would have 14 days to respond to any DPH comments. The DPH has 14 days from a zoom public hearing held April 21 to approve or issue comments.
Wareham Healthcare’s closure plan includes working with other care facilities in the area to provide placements for the residents. “Wareham Healthcare and Next Step (owner Next Step Healthcare LLC) will work with the residents and their families to identify appropriate placements for all residents in a facility capable of meeting all of their needs, including the consideration of the resident s and family s choice of facility.”

As part of the closure process, the facility and the state Department of Public Health will be holding a public hearing via teleconference at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21.
The hearing is open to all, and can be joined by dialing 888-390-5007 and entering the passcode 8108064#.

The Department of Public Health will accept written comments until 9 p.m. on April 21 at HFLLicenseAction@mass.gov.
Ahead of the facility’s closure, Wareham Healthcare will be helping current residents find beds at other nursing homes in the area. Employees have been given the option to transfer to one of Next Step Healthcare’s other nursing homes while maintaining their seniority.

BY THE NUMBERS: Berkshire County saw two new COVID-19 deaths Monday, raising the total to 131, with the confirmed case count up 56, to 2,733, the state Department of Public Health said.
The DPH said 48 new deaths were reported in Massachusetts on Monday, pushing the statewide total to 11,900. Deaths including those listed as probably caused by COVID-19 are 12,158. Confirmed cases rose 4,060, to 342,764. According to data provided by Johns Hopkins University, at least 229,910 people in Massachusetts with COVID-19 have recovered.
NUMBER OF ACTIVE CASES: 80,620 statewide; 959 in Pittsfield; 413 households in quarantine in Pittsfield.
