pelley: and this is a special western edition. good evening. voting is underway in iowa s republican caucuses, and based on our cbs news polling, we can tell you that it s neck and neck and neck. cbs news estimates it s coming down to a three-way race among mitt romney, ron paul and rick santorum. voters going into the caucuses told us that the most important issue facing the country is the economy. followed by the federal budget deficit. 40% of voters two out of five told us they didn t decide on a candidate until just the last few daysment our entire cbs news campaign 2012 team is covering this first contest in the race for the g.o.p. presidential nomination. we ll go first to chief political correspondent jan crawford with the romney campaign. jan? well, good evening, scott. romney and his entire campaign have been striking an increasing confident tone over the past week. after keeping expectations deliberately low for months. but internal polling started to show about
millionaire friends fund the pac, he pretends he has nothing to do with the pac. it s bologna, he s not telling the american people the truth. reporter: he s talking about these ads made by a group supporting but not affiliated with romney which are almost inescapable here. newt supports amnesty for illegal immigrants. reporter: one study says 45% of all the ads in iowa have attacked gingrich, compared to only 20% attacking romney. what has the race taught you so far? there s a very substantial number of people who want a positive campaign and i think the fact that we ve survived three and a half million plus of negative ads from romney is an amazing thing. i was surprised at how dishonest and negative romney s campaign was going to be and we re adjusting to it. by the time we get to new hampshire we ll have adjusted. reporter: but you know, scott, gingrich s standing in new hampshire has also declined and he can t really blame it on negative ads because there have
