The Indian Ocean has been very alive over the past few weeks. Especially in Indonesia. And this trend shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon stay tuned, as we’ll be bringing realtime coverage from surfing’s favorite island chain as the swell(s) hit. Yeah, plural. Kevin Wallis breaks it down: “Similar to the storm that set up the Good to Epic waves at Lance’s Right in late May, the storm that set up this swell wasn’t especially big or strong,” Wallis explains. “But it did take a favorable track and carried respectable seas to within 1800 miles of the Mentawais, which allowed for a medium-size SSW swell to develop. As the swell arrived it was groomed by light wind into perfect conditions at Kandui.”

More solid Indian Ocean swell pulsed into the Island of the Gods and then things got serious

It’s embarrassing, frankly. The Indonesian archipelago has been so good for so long that anyone who’s lucky enough to have been there over these past few weeks is almost suffering from some weird surf version of survivor’s guilt. The islands have seen three+ back-to-back-to-back swells just in the past week which culminated in the biggest of the season so far, which hit August 1st. (We’re currently going through the mountain of material stay tuned for a full wrap on that.) As the swell was rising the day before its Sunday peak, long-period groundswell sets like the one above would peel down the entire length of the Bukit Peninsula, sending surfers into tube overload.

Just one moment from an Australian winter on fire.

To be perfectly honest, this could have been almost anywhere along the NSW coastline on this particular day. A weekend of beautiful, clean, soft if still well overhead surf was tracked in by something just a bit more muscular and long-interval. Right on cue, the coldest offshore winds of the year so far came gusting over the coastal escarpment above this splendid surf zone, brushing back dozens nay, possibly hundreds of wedged-up beachbreak peaks. Add to that a Covid-inspired lockdown in nearby Sydney, with its associated restrictions on roaring up and down the coast hunting waves, and silent yet increasingly deadly photographer Steen Barnes found his lens pointing at this moment of glorious emptiness. It’s still the Year of the Local down here, gang.
