The Trump administration on Wednesday rejected a permit for the controversial Pebble copper and gold mine in Southwest Alaska.
The decision could be a fatal blow for the long-sought, roller-coaster effort to build the giant project near the world's largest wild sockeye salmon fishery in Bristol Bay.
The mine developers plan to appeal the decision back to federal regulators, but with the opposition of President-elect Joe Biden and many others, the project's days may be limited. Pebble opponents, including Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, are already discussing an idea to take the mineral deposit off the table from development forever.
now, it is at the center of this. the supreme court has basically decided at this point that the house of representatives is not going to get the president's financial records at this point. they have put an emergency stay on this and they are deciding whether they want to hear the merits of this case. this would be a huge case for the separation of powers, and so we're waiting to see how the supreme court moves >> on that we're expecting to hear their decision on that within a matter of weeks. sara murray, thank you so much. joining me now from memphis is tennessee congressman steve cohn, democrat on the house judiciary committee. always great to have you on. thank you. >> good to be with you. >> let me begin by asking you about the judge's ruling that mcgahn can testify. does that change the window as far as timing on an impeachment vote for you? would you prolong that investigation if you had the opportunity to interview mcgahn and other allies of the president in close contact? >> that will be a decision that speaker pelosi and chairman
wouldn't know the truth if it smacked him in the face. so calling us savages is despicable and wrong and weir americans and congress people and he ought to respect that and he throws the squad in there. the reason he throws the squad in there is because they are minorities and they are brown and black minorities and it's a slight at them. that is part of his game plan. now these seven other folks that just came out and the five women that call themselves the bad asses. they're caucasians and he'll call them something, too, and it's unbelieve that he would do that with cia and, and they didn't have bone spurs, and this man has no limits to how far they'll go and he'll get worse as he sees the noose coming around his neck and his leaving power. >> congressman, thanks so much for joining us. >> good to be with you. happy new year.

>> well, it's all kind of being played by ear, and right now intel's going to take the primary spot and during the break they'll be meeting and trying to get witnesses perform and very hearings and everything they can do and adam schiff is a great chairman and they hear classified material which some of this will be and that's important. when we come back certainly, if there are recommendations for impeachment through that article and/or others it will come to judiciary for final approval before it goes to the floor. how much control will be allowed or discretion as far as adding maybe obstruction of congress which is a blatant obstruction of congress by this administration and will probably continue to be through the intel hearing where that will be added or not, i don't know. >> do you think, congressman -- do you think there will be a full house vote on articles of impeachment by thanksgiving?
congressman steve cohn, a member of the judiciary committee. it's good to see you, congressman. you have supported impeachment since late 2017. why do you think that now, almost two years later, some of your colleagues are changining their minds? >> the democratic base is very much in favor of impeachment. the mueller testimony really was eye opening to some, in that it showed clearly that five of the obstruction charges had all of the constituent elements had been met and that there were ten and so arguably, you had ten obstructions, but five, all of the elements were met. and that there were over 100 contacts with russia and the trump campaign during the election. and while there might not have been a conspiracy, there was cooperation and welcome of the russian involvement and all of those things together, but the democratic base has made a lot
scheduled, may still be scheduled to interview the former special counsel, congress steve cohn of tennessee, a the committee. and carolyn flection is author of "the democracy fix." carolyn testified today before the house judiciary committee in addressing presidential misconduct. thank you both for joining us. congressman, let me start with you and see if we can get some news out you have. when is robert mueller going to testify before your committee? >> well, that's still being negotiated by the committee and committee counsel. so we don't really know. but i suspect he will testify i would get the 24th, but that's all up in the air. >> is this reporting from "the washington post" correct that it was mueller who came to the committee and said perhaps a delay would be in order here? he was the one who suggested this? >> i don't know that for a fact. i just know that they had negotiation, and part of it was to have more time for the
clinton and the democratic party. so, you know, we have to be concerned about our elections and the integrity of our elections, and congress needs to get to the bottom of that. whether it leads to impeachment or not, we still need to understand how to protect our elections. >> if you guys are going on recess for the rest of the summer, you just went through a whole list of people you want to hear from. does that run the clock out? >> well, first of all, they're subpoenas, and that's going start a court process. i don't expect that the trump team will not try to stop each and every one of these people, even corey lewandowski, who was not a part of the administration and find every way to stop us. and so i don't think it will happen soon. but the committee has talked about meeting in august, having hearings in august, and continuing our work in august. we're not going to stop because of the recess. we're going to continue to try to pursue the truth on behalf of the american people. that's our duty as the judiciary under article i. >> steve cohn from tennessee,
some extent, but she might have been reassuring people who were so much for impeachment while she is not that she has no love for trump. she is not doing him any favors, and we want to get to the same result which is trump to be out of our public lives and simply a distant spot in our rear view mirror. >> understood. i wonder if that comment buys the speaker any time within the dramatic caucus and the numbers, as you site them, 60 now and about 220 who support impeachment. is there a time for the speaker? or are you saying the time is now? >> well, i think the time system coming soon. i would think in july, but possibly september, but no later than september. i do think there is a time factor, and time son her side, as the song used to be. >> congressman steve cohn, nice to have you on the program this evening. >> thank you, jim. nice to be with you. we have some breaking news into cnn.
