City Council opposes LHU integration | News, Sports, Jobs

From staff reports LOCK HAVEN Lock Haven City Council would like the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) to put the brakes on integrating Lock Haven University with Bloomsburg and Mansfield. Council this week unanimously approved a resolution opposing the proposed merger of the three institutions. Councilman Bill Mincer offered the measure, saying PASSHE needs to do a more in-depth study of any merger’s impact on the students, community and economy. His resolution came one day before PASSHE Chancellor Daniel Greenstein met virtually with LHU faculty and staff, and a few days before Greenstein’s scheduled testimony before the General Assembly.

City to consider alley closure request from Stella A s | News, Sports, Jobs

LAURA JAMESON ljameson@lockhaven.com LOCK HAVEN City council will consider adopting a resolution that would close Sarah’s Alley for at least 90 days. The closure was requested by Louis Anastos, owner of Stella A’s Bar & Grill. The downtown restaurant is located on one side of the alley, with the Strouse Law Firm sharing the other side. Anastos made the request to expand the restaurant’s outdoor dining to the city last week. Anastos said he spoke with the landlords of both Stella A’s and the law firm who expressed their approval. He also discussed the proposal with the restaurant’s insurance company and a representative of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.

In 1926, the local chapter began just 11 years after Kiwanis International was founded in 1915 by a group of businessmen in Detroit, Mich. The organization was originally called the Supreme Lodge Benevolent Order of Brothers, but changed its name to Kiwanis a year later. Kiwanis International is a global community of clubs, members and partners dedicated to improving the lives of children one community at a time. The name “Kiwanis” was coined from an American Indian expression, “Nunc Kee-wanis,” which means, “We trade.”
