MARTINS FERRY A fundraiser dinner is being organized to help a victim of a recent house fire in Martins Ferry. Gary Rettig, his fellow Gas Guys Garage of Martins Ferry co-workers and his wife Colleen Rettig, have been collecting donations of clothes and other items for fire victim Cheryl Green, whose South 10th Street home was heavily damaged last Saturday by a fire.

MARTINS FERRY The city’s safety forces received high praise from city officials during Wednesday’s regular Martins Ferry City Council meeting. The accolades for the police, fire and EMS personnel come on the heels of two police officers Steve Veltri and Vince West saving two women from burning structures on Saturday. Jack Regis Jr., firefighter and safety director for the city, said the officers were the first on the scene of the fire. After the officers saved the women from the burning houses, EMS personnel treated them. He said civilians in the neighborhood also came to their aid.

Martins Ferry police officers saved two elderly women from burning structures on Saturday. City Police Chief John McFarland said Officers Steve Veltri and Vince West were first to arrive at the scene of a working structure fire on South 10th Street. Both immediately took action to save an elderly woman from the house, as well as another elderly woman from a neighboring house that also received some fire damage. He noted the officers also helped save some pets as well. “They were on the scene in less than a minute to do all this and get the job done,” McFarland said. “It makes me very proud.”
