Brendan Smialowski/AFP via Getty Images The last bit of genuine suspense for the 116th Congress is whether Congress will override Donald Trump’s veto for the first time over this year’s National Defense Authorization Act. Passage of the annual defense policy measure, which authorizes $740 billion this year, is one of the rare bipartisan rituals remaining in Washington  it has been executed every year since 1961. Both Houses passed the 2020 NDAA by veto-proof margins (335-78 in the House, 84-13 in the Senate). Some Republicans who voted for it have indicated they won’t support an override, which would be the first of the Trump presidency.

NJ effort to protect judges information blocked in Congress

A U.S. senator from Kentucky on Wednesday blocked the New Jersey lawmakers pledge to increase privacy protections for judges following the fatal shooting at federal judge Esther Salas’ North Brunswick home this year. Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey called on the Senate to expedite a bill that would protect judges home addresses from public disclosure. But Sen. Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican, blocked the request asking that members of Congress  including himself and his colleagues also be included. Menendez said that was a laudable goal, but one that should be addressed in separate legislation while the bill named after Salas son, who was killed, should move forward quickly.
