A number of questions hinging on the safety of GRPS students were raised at a forum on Saturday.

During a Saturday safety forum, parents and teachers said they wanted Grand Rapids Public Schools to increase security and add more mental health experts districtwide, following four incidents where students brought guns into school.

The handgun was found in the 7-year-old child’s possession at César E. Chávez Elementary School in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on May 3, according to the school district.

The charges stem from a May 3 incident in which a second-grade student brought an unloaded gun in a backpack to Cesar E. Chavez Elementary School, Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker said in a news conference.

When the 7-year-old child found the gun, his mother told him not to tell anyone about it.
