Grand Rapids Public Schools is adding a backpack ban after confiscating a gun from a student. The superintendent says it’s a ‘drastic’ but necessary step.

Grand Rapids Public School banned backpacks Wednesday after another student brought a gun to school.

Grand Rapids Public Schools' new backpack ban came as a surprise to parents and students, given there was no opportunity for feedback prior to it taking effect on Thursday, May 11.

This is the fourth incident of a student having a gun at Grand Rapids Public Schools' building and the second incident in the last week.

The districtwide backpack ban at Grand Rapids Public Schools goes into effect immediately.
