CoreCivic asks Leavenworth County to take over detention center

The Leavenworth Times Officials with CoreCivic are proposing that the county government take over the operations of the company’s Leavenworth Detention Center. The idea is being proposed as a way to keep the local facility open following a presidential executive order that prohibits the U.S Department of Justice from contracting with privately-operated detention centers. Under the proposal, CoreCivic would retain ownership of the the Leavenworth Detention Center property, which would be leased by the county. Damon Hininger, president and CEO of CoreCivic, reviewed the proposal Wednesday with Leavenworth County commissioners. He acknowledged there are still a lot of “what ifs” associated with the proposal.

Forecast: Stranger Creek to flood

The National Weather Service is forecasting that Stranger Creek will flood this week. The forecast, which was posted on a NWS website Tuesday, predicts the creek will rise to 20.4 feet in the Easton area by Thursday morning. The creek reaches flood stage at 17 feet in this area. When the creek reaches 20 feet, all roads out of Easton are closed except for Kansas 192 Highway 192 west of 231st Street, according to the NWS. The creek rose to 11.49 feet Monday but had dropped to a depth of only 5.11 feet by 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. Forecasters are expecting the creek to rise again based on anticipated rainfall, according to Leavenworth County Emergency Management Director Chuck Magaha.

Solar farm planned in Leavenworth County

Solar farm planned in Leavenworth County John Richmeier Leavenworth County soon will be home to a new solar farm. The farm will be constructed on FreeState Electric Cooperative’s Stranger Creek substation, which is located northeast of the city of Tonganoxie on Tonganoxie Drive. Sarah Farlee, marketing director for FreeState Electric Cooperative, said the solar farm will be constructed on a nine-acre site owned by the cooperative and have 4,200 solar panels. It is anticipated the solar farm will be completed in late spring or early summer. The 1-megawatt solar farm is being constructed in partnership with Today’s Power, which will build and maintain ownership of the solar infrastructure.
