E-Mail IMAGE: Dalian Coherent Light Source revealing three-body photodissociation of water as an important prebiotic-O2 source view more Credit: DICP The provenance of oxygen on Earth and other solar planetary bodies is a fundamental issue. It is widely accepted that the prebiotic pathway of oxygen production in the Earth primitive atmosphere was via vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photodissociation of CO 2 and subsequent recombination of two O atoms. In contrast, the photodissociation of ...

E-Mail IMAGE: A. The regulation of SLAC1 control of stomatal aperture; B. The cryo-EM structure of plant SLAC1; C. The electrophysiological characterization of key phosphorylation residues in SLAC1. view more Credit: IGDB Stomata, formed by a pair of kidney-shaped guard cells, are tiny pores in leaves. They act like mouths that plants use to "eat" and "breathe." When they open, carbon dioxide (CO 2) enters the plant for photosynthesis and oxygen (O 2) is released into the atmosphere...

E-Mail Credit: IOCAS Earthquakes and volcanoes in subduction zones may cause great human catastrophe. Previous studies on subduction zone structure and causal mechanisms of giant megathrust earthquakes (M ≥ 9.0) have mainly focused on aspects like subducting plates and plate interfaces. In contrast, the oceanic asthenosphere structure beneath the subducting slab (at depths of 100-250 km) and its influence on the nucleation of giant megathrust earthquakes have not been well studied. Recently...

Credit: IGDB A mechanistic understanding of brain development requires a systematic survey of neural progenitor cell types, their lineage specification and maturation of postmitotic neurons. Cumulative evidences based on single-cell transcriptomic analysis have revealed the heterogeneity of cortical neural progenitors, their temporal patterning and the developmental trajectories of excitatory and inhibitory neurons in the developing neocortex. Nevertheless, the developmental hierarchy of the hy...

Study Shows Abnormal Enhancement of a-Particle Clustering in Uranium Isotopes Written by AZoMApr 19 2021 In nuclear physics research, the discovery of new isotopes with extreme proton/neutron numbers is always fascinating. The α-decay in the heavy nuclei region is one of the ubiquitous decay modes and has a crucial role in the search for new isotopes. The illustration of the enhanced α-particle preformation in 214, 216U deduced by the strong proton-neutron interaction. Image Credit: Zhiyuan ...

Chinese Academy of Sciences It is always exciting to find new isotopes with extreme neutron/proton numbers in nuclear physics research. In the region of heavy nuclei, α-decay is one of the pervasive decay modes and plays an essential role in searching for new isotopes. However, even after about a century of studying α-decay, scientists still cannot perfectly describe how the α-particle is formed at the surface of the nucleus before its emission. In the α-decay process, the α-particle can b...

Q Q 10 values derived from multiyear observations at 74 FLUXNET sites spanning diverse climates and biomes. We found warming-induced decline in Q 10 is stronger at colder regions than other locations, which is consistent with a meta-analysis of 54 field warming experiments across the globe. We predict future warming will shrink the global variability of Q 10 values to an average of 1.44 across the globe under a high emission trajectory (RCP 8.5) by the end of the century. Therefore, warming-i...
