significant you would think they are. well, i think they re very significant, i think there s a lot of people saying, when the deal came out, that it was sort of bigger than folks had expected, and it is probably due to those two provisions, which really weren t in the reporting as we re negotiating. the boyfriend loophole is a big deal, right? because, right now, if a man beat south his wife, he is prevented from buying a weapon, but if a man beats up his girlfriend, that is not a prohibited class of defenses. so you have domestic abusers who are still able to buy guns, you have boyfriends who are subject to restraining orders against that girlfriend still been able to buy guns. it is almost too generous to call it a loophole, it s just a giant gap in the law, we are closing it. second, very surprising to people that straw purchasing, which is when somebody goes in and buys guns at a gun store for somebody that is actually prohibited from buying guns, a
actually came to the conclusion that, this time, they really couldn t do nothing, that they would play a pretty big price if they did not. i do also think that our approach was different this time. we very quickly said, listen, we are not going to argue about things that can get 60 votes, we will get right down to the business of trying to find what can pass. and, it was surprising to those of us in the room, myself, kristen sinema in particular, that atlas was longer than we thought. and it actually expanded over the course of negotiations. so, i think the public made the biggest difference, but i also think that our willingness to relieve zero in on 60 was important. two aspects, going through the framework as imported, was closing the so-called boyfriend loophole, which i ve had multiple conversations with multiple democratic senators on four years. as well as a straw purchasing, which is a huge issue, and i don t know at the devil of the details of those are, but tell me those
most excited about the criminalization of gun trafficking and straw purchasing. that first-ever statute will make it a lot harder for these gun traffickers to move guns into our cities. the domestic violence loophole is going to make sure that domestic abusers don t get guns, not just abusers of spouses but abusers of girlfriends as well. that s a big deal. so cumulatively, this is the most important anti-gun violence bill in 30 years, and so each provision builds upon the other. you heard the president say the deal is not everything he wanted though it s better than nothing. i know it s certainly not everything you wanted either. that s what compromise is all about. do you think any of the other measures, raising the age to 21 for getting an assault-type weapon, even a ban on assault-type weapons or high-capacity magazines is that ever a realistic something that has a realistic chance of passing without huge changes at the ballot box? well, listen, you re right
going on in our country. how dangerous our schools and town squares have become, and they are not going to accept inaction as the result. but they also want action now, so my colleagues are moving fast. that s great. but the pressure is coming not internally. the pressure is coming externally from moms and dads and kids who want this congress to step up and do something to make our country safer. what do you think the most important measures are that are included in this? i really think the bill is the sum of its parts. you know, i don t want to elevate one against the other. obviously the red flag provision gets a lot of attention because this bill is going to help states implement laws that take guns away temporarily from people that are threatening to shoot up a school or threatening to shoot up a school or threatening to kill themselves. in hartford today, the african american leadership was maybe most excited about the criminalization of gun trafficking and straw purchasing. t
reporter: the bipartisan group of senators that has been working on some sort of framework on gun safety reform in the wake of the uvalde shooting announced on sunday that they had reached a framework. they had reached a deal. we do not have the legislative text yet, that is incredibly important but an agreement in principle will have measures that support estate crisis intervention orders, investment in child and family mental health services, protections for victims of somatic violence, funding for school mental health support services, funding for school safety resources and telehealth investments and also important and notable, and enhanced review process for buyers under the age of 21, and, there is also going to be a measure that includes penalties for straw purchasing. i also want to emphasize that there are 10 republicans who
