They bonded over their love for Hanson Twenty years later they reunite for the concert of their teen dreams

I love Hanson. Yes, the band Hanson, with brothers Isaac, Taylor and Zac. It is 1997, I am 12 years old and I am not allowed to wear makeup, no matter how much I protest. And Hanson’s first single, “MMMBop,” is the hit of the summer. But Hanson is not popular the way the Backstreet Boys are popular. They’re from Tulsa, Okla., they’re very religious (read: wholesome) and, as the boys in my sixth-grade class always say, their long hair makes them look like girls. But as I made my way to my seat, I was dismayed to notice a sea of empty red rows in the balcony. I was suddenly a tween on the defensive again, and I felt the urge to defend the band to curse everyone who didn’t understand how great they were.

Arizona-based artist Lauren Sarah Hayes livestreams as part of the Jefferson Park EXP series in November 2020. Courtesy Keith Helt For her livestreamed concert in the Jefferson Park EXP series last December, Chicago experimental musician Kimberly Sutton trained her camera on a pair of lit candles and several speaker cones of various sizes, resting on their backs like bowls and filled with water or sand. As the vibrations from the speakers increased, liquid and sand and flame started to tremble and flicker, forming restless and intricate interference patterns. Eventually the hums and throbs grew intense enough that the water began to bubble and spatter; you could see the sound leaping free of its cages and making a bid for freedom.

José González Announces New Album Local Valley, Shares New Song

José González has announced his first new album in six years. Local Valley is out September 17 via Mute. Check out the album’s second song “Visions” below.  “We are the apes that are starting to understand the universe and our place in it,” González said of the song in a statement. “We are changing our surroundings in an exceedingly rapid pace, so much that we’re becoming stewards of our planet whether we like it or not. As Stewart Brand said, ‘We are as gods and we have to get good at it.’ The lyrics came to me in early February 2020 just as there were more and more tweets about the possible pandemic. The topic of the song felt very timely. You can hear the birds and ambient sounds from the veranda, along with a layer of synth loops in the background.”
