Research published in the journal Neurology in mid-May shows that although the number of stroke-related deaths worldwide has increased significantly over the past three decades, the number of strokes per 100,000 people has fallen. The number of deaths worldwide from ischemic stroke increased from 2 million in 1990 to more than 3 million in 2019, and is expected to increase to nearly 5 million by 2030, according to a study published in the May 17, 2023, online issue of Neurology®, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. The study focused on ischemic stroke, which is caused by a blockage of blood flow to the brain and is the most common type of stroke.
