A store clerk who used a baseball bat to hit a man who attempted to rob his convenience store is now facing a charge of aggravated assault, Peterborough police said.

Peterborough police chief Stuart Betts says a charge against a clerk who struck a robbery suspect with the latter's own baseball bat is based on evidence, not politics or race.

Harnett takes over for former Deputy Chief Tim Farquharson who retired in March 2023.

Jamie Hartnett has served with the Peterborough Police Service since 2001 in a number of ranks and divisions. He will begin his new role as deputy chief on Jan. 9, 2024.

Peterborough County OPP, Rama First Nations Police Services, and the Peterborough Police Service will receive $492,609.94 to implement the initiative.

Peterborough-Kawartha MPP Dave Smith said over $492,000 will support the Peterborough area police and Rama First Nations police to tackle the rise in auto thefts.

The city will pay $15 million for the property — as opposed to paying $68M for a new police station. The Water Street station will remain the base of operations and investigations.

Two men in Peterborough were initially involved in a verbal dispute that turned violent. Police allege one man struck the other with a knife several times.
