Now comes the latest entry into the lexicon: "Flurona."

The number of actual infections could be three times the previous peak from delta variant, but the most likely scenario doesnt show a similar jump in deaths.

While delta and omicron have made headlines, there have been more than a dozen COVID variants since the start of the pandemic.

From when cases from the latest surge may peak, to if vaccinations rates will hit a 70% threshold, to whether death rates may be lower in 2022.

Other factors that might lead to greater risk include age, type of vaccine or booster received, and underlying health problems.

However, millions of Americans, particularly the unvaccinated, remain vulnerable to more serious disease from the most transmissible coronavirus variant to date.

The new variant has sent U.S. infections soaring, but a smaller share than with delta are resulting in hospitalization.
