Long Beach officials broke ground Wednesday on a long-anticipated overhaul of the Artesia Boulevard corridor in North Long Beach, a project that the city says will increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists and also help to present a better first impression of the city.

Residents in the 90808 can’t complain about green space, leading the city in that category thanks to El Dorado East Regional Park at 388 acres, along with Heartwell Park’s 122.5 acres and Wardlow Park’s 15.8 acres.

The bridge will double as a welcome sign to drivers heading into the city on the 22 Freeway.

John Leo Meylor, 35, of Laguna Niguel pleaded not guilty to one count of felony arson of an inhabited structure and 14 counts of arson of property.

A 35-year-old Laguna Niguel man was booked on 13 counts of arson, one count of arson to an inhabited structure and one count of parole violation, Long Beach police said.

The project on Studebaker Road in East Long Beach would include several street improvements to enhance safety along the corridor, including a 5-mile protected bike lane.

The city in May awarded a nearly $3 million contract to the owner of a motel that was named one of six nuisance motels due to high crime. Recent data shows the situation hasn’t improved.

The $36 million project will improve pedestrian safety by narrowing crosswalks and adding protected bike lanes. The entire 3.2-mile stretch of Artesia will see a variety of improvements to traffic signals, medians and lighting.

Police said the collision happened just before midnight at the intersection of Studebaker Road and Spring Street.
