The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will have no director for now after its current chief RK Shukla s term ends today. Sources say a high-powered committee led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will decide on a new candidate soon and until then, the country s top investigating agency will have an acting chief.

New Delhi, Feb 03: With the tenure of the current CBI chief, R K Shukla s ending today, the government is likely to have an acting chief for now.
Sources tell OneIndia that the high-powered committee headed by the Prime Minister would decide on the next chief and until then an acting chief would be in place. Praveen Sinha, additional director in the CBI will take over as the interim director, sources say.
While Shukla will not be an extension, the frontrunners for the top post in the CBI are Border Security Force chief, Rakesh Asthana, NIA chief, Y C Modi, Kerala Police chief, Loknath Behera, ITBP chief, S S Deswal and top Maharashtra cop, Subodh Kumar Jaiswal.

Synopsis
The two year tenure of Rishi Kumar Shukla as Director, CBI ended on Wednesday. Shukla had superseded Alok Verma in February 2019 after Verma was unceremoniously removed as Director, CBI by the government.

The high powered committee, comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India SA Bobde and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, will shortly meet to take a call on the next CBI Director.
With the Prime Minister-led high powered committee yet to convene a meeting to decide on the next Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the charge will be held on an interim basis by agency s Additional Director Praveen Sinha, a 1988 batch Gujarat cadre IPS officer.
