Khartoum, Arabic Al-Khurṭūm, (“Elephant’s Trunk”), city, executive capital of Sudan, just south of the confluence of the Blue and White Nile rivers. Originally an Egyptian army camp (pitched 1821), Khartoum grew into a garrisoned army town.
