The Centre has placed a cap on the export of sugar under the "restricted" category which will be effective from June 1.

The government said that the decision was taken to ensure adequate supplies and keep prices stable.

The government has also allowed export of sugar up to 100 LMT in order to maintain the domestic availability and price stability during the season.

During the 2020-21 marketing year, the country exported a record 72.3 lakh tonnes of sweetener.
